Yesterday was the slowest day ever.
I woke up at 2:30 am to the sound of a drunken squirrel running back and forth on our roof. I’m not sure what time the nut bar closes but holy cow, that crazy squirrel must have ran across our roof at least 50 times before settling down for the night.
And as expected, I couldn’t get back to sleep.
And then the rest of the day just dragged on from there.
Lucy Puggle lounged around all day moving between her lion chair and the couch.
I went to the Home Depot to pick up some paint and grabbed a new succulent for my terrarium.
And then I pretty much spent the rest of the day out front removing all the overgrown grass from the rocks. Well, on one side of the yard at least. Today I’m going to attempt to get the other side done. And then hide the seed spreader so the HH can’t go crazy with it again this summer.
Then, for the grand finale, I tossed some vegetables in a pan, threw a chicken on top, set the timer and then told the kids to take it out and feed themselves when the timer went off.
Then crawled into bed at 6pm.
The end.
That’s it. The slowest day ever.

Hey, Mavis-
May I suggest that you invest the time to toss tarps over the rock area where you don’t want hubby to broadcast seed, fertilizer, etc.? It may be one of those “ounce of prevention” things that saves your gardening time for something you enjoy. You might even be able to reclaim what you keep out of your rocks to put where it is needed, too.

Nice tip Rosaleen. I will do this. Thanks!!

Yay, you are human! I was beginning to think you were a modern-day superhero since you are always so upbeat and fun–which is why I love you read your blog. 🙂 The past few days, I was thinking, does this girl ever have a down day? What is her secret? So, thanks for sharing your ups and your downs. Hope today is a better day for you & Lucy!!

HI Mavis, I’m concerned about the squirrel running laps on your roof at two in the morning. Curious ..do you have an attic to your house? because H.H. might want to go up in it and check things out.
You see I have a lot of experience with those things because they are known at this time of year especially to invade attics and they could be flying squirrels or the common ground squirrel. Either way this is baby season for them, pregnant females looking for a nice cozy warm place, aka your attic to make a nest for her young. Now if its a flying squirrel, well shoot they take up a yearly residence in there!
Now at this point you may be wondering, “what in the world is this lady going on about” ..so to get to the main part of my story, I have had both kind of squirrels get into my attic!! the flying ones are the worst! because they multiply like crazy and share their nesting sites, again, aka your attic with the whole freaking community. I actually paid a wild life service $350 to get rid of them. He had to come and walk the roof and plug any holes with hardware cloth that were as big or bigger then his thumb. They can squeeze their bodies down to nothing to get into a warm house. The ground squirrels are as bad just not as community oriented and don’t like to share a nest unless they have to! Either way if you have them, your hearing them early in the am for flying squirrels because they are nocturnal and go out of the attic right around dark to forage food and come back home to sleep around the hours of 2 and 5 am. It sounds like theirs a heard of them because, well there most like is.
My Reason for telling you this is because regular ground squirrels do not run the top of the roof like that. They sleep until dawn and then go eat all day. Opposite of flying squirrels.
The reason I have blown up your page to tell you all this is because, if you have them they can be destroying your house without you knowing it! they chew on everything (trims their teeth) including but not limited to the electrical wiring, piping, the trusses of the house, the insulation, etc. which they use to make nests.
Hope i’m wrong but its worth checking it out, Oh! the wild life guy I hired trapped 20 or so in my attic , various ages and while he was baiting traps with peanut butter and combos, he told me the story of how his friend lost his house, those rodents shorted the wiring and it burned to the ground!!
Please have HH get up in the attic and look around. He’ll be looking for droppings smaller then a rats, usually in one place (they are polite to use the same bathroom), wet spots on the wood (pee) and pulled insulation for nesting.
Hope this ALL was overwhelming for you.

I love that I’m not the only one that bought one of those animal chairs at costco for my dog! I’m pretty sure they are for kids, but I thought they were so cute and I had to get one. 🙂 I got the giraffe one for our Boston Terrier and I was hoping she would lay in it and suckle on it like Lucy is doing, but she mostly just drags it around every now and then.
Mavis Butterfield says
Awwww yes, I think they are for kids but oh well, Lucy likes hers.
Trish says
Nice that Lucy snuggles in her lion chair. My dogs would eat something like that while they were laying on it. 😉 It would probably take them about a day or so and there would be fluffy white “clouds” all over the place!
Mavis Butterfield says
I was surprised as well. Maybe this is a sign she is calming down… or maybe she has just moved on to chewing up electrical cords. 🙁
Trish says
I guess I can’t complain — they are past the stage of chewing on anything else. Even the kids toys are pretty safe as long as they aren’t stuffed 🙂
