For date day last week, we headed out early so we could spend the day exploring the towns of Cushing, Port Clyde, St. George and Rockland, Maine. After watching the Andrew Wyeth documentary last month, I’ve been a little fixated on the area and wanted to see if it was as beautiful in person, as it was in the documentary. And it was.
This particular area of Maine {as well as pretty much any coastal town} is a major hot spot during the summer months, and since I’m not a fan of crowds, or the whole peak tourist scene in general, an ordinary February day seemed the perfect time for an adventure.
I just wasn’t expecting it to be zero degrees outside when I woke up that morning. ๐ Ahhh but it’s Maine, right? All you need is a good pair of winter boots and warm clothing and you’re good to go.
One of the things I chose to do that day was to walk out to the Breakwater Lighthouse in Rockland. A mere 7/8 mile walk {each way} across a rough stone wall.
Mind the gap.
Luckily though by the time we got there it had warmed up to about 12 degrees, so walking out to the lighthouse wasn’t so bad and what do you know, we had the whole breakwater to ourselves. ๐
Poor little crabby crab. His little legs were still trying to wiggle free.
Note to self: Next time bring a face mask and hand warmers. And maybe wear snow pants.
The lighthouse itself has been around since 1902, and currently closed for the season. And while it was hard to get any good pictures from up close, it was still fun to imagine what it would have been like to be a lighthouse keeper way back when.
Call me crazy, but the idea of being held up in a lighthouse during a major storm seems like a pretty exciting thing to me.
Did I mention the wall was built between 1881 and 1899? 18 years to build a wall! Can you imagine? I wonder how long a project like this would take these days?
We’ve only been here a few months, and everyday I wake up so thankful we are living here in the great state of Maine. It’s absolutely beautiful, and it truly feels like home. I’m so glad we took the leap when we did. There is SO MUCH to do here, and so many tiny towns to explore, and I never want to leave. ♥
Wishing you the best of Wednesdays,
~Mavis

When I was 13 I lived in Rockland,Maine. I saw that lighthouse out my bedroom window every morning. Out of all the place I lived, I loved Rockland so much. Thank you for sharing your trip there… such a walk down memory lane for me. The lighthouse looks the same as it did over twenty years ago! lol…

I was in Portsmouth,NH this past weekend and spent Sat. driving up part of the Maine coast as far as Wells. Having moved to Vermont for retirement I am so glad we are able to get over to coast! There is nothing like the ocean! My dream would be to live in Maine………but then I would miss Vermont.

Donโt you just love the Rockland area. My nephew lives there and we go there every trip East. I could easily live there if my family lived close by!but at the moment all my girls live here in the Seattle area. Oh well, at least we occasionally get to visit the East Coast!
