Mrs. HB came over yesterday morning to go for a walk {the rain had finally stopped!} and she brought Lucy’s BFF along with her. As usual, our fur-babies had a blast together running around the yard and aerating the soil. š
On the way over to my house Mrs. HB remembered she had an important conference call so about 2 minutes into our visit she had to pop her ear buds on, check in, say a few things and then she basically had the phone on mute for the rest of our walk.
How funny is that? Her job is so weird, but really, jobs like hers are becoming the norm these days. Occasionally she puts dress clothes on and goes in to work for her appointments, sometimes she travels {although it never seems to be anywhere too exciting}, but most of the time it seems like she can just squeeze in her computer work when it’s convenient. It’s kind of like a dream schedule if you ask me.
We have new neighbors. And it appears they bought a new mattress. Has anyone tried one of those gel memory foam mattresses? Are they any good? Our current mattress is 10+ years old {we bought it at Costco} and I think it might be time to get a new one.
I’m kind of a traditional girl though so the idea of buying a giant foam pad makes me a little uneasy. I mean, don’t you think it would conform to my body quicker than a regular mattress? Am I missing something here? How is it better than a regular mattress? Because really, it’s not like you can walk into Costco and open a box with a foam mattress in it and lay it on the ground and test it out.Ā Do you have one? Do you like it?
Mondays, being trash day and all are my favorite day to walk around the neighborhood. Mrs. HB just rolls her eyes at me every time I suggest we walk around the hood on a Monday.
That is of course until we come upon a trash can full of goodness. Flower pot? Like new doormat? Yes please! Life. It can be totally random sometimes. One minute your talking on the phone and trying to be all professional and stuff and the next minute your pulling perfectly good stuff out of someones garbage with your friend.
Have a wonderful Tuesday everyone, and may your day be filled with some excitement. š

I have the Costco gel mattress pads on all the beds in my house and they are amazing. My guests always rave about how comfortable my beds are and how great they sleep at my house. They put them on sale a few times a year. I also like how they come with a cover that is washable and doesn’t shrink to nothing after many washings.

My daughter just bought a new memory foam mattress and she says she would like to stay in bed all the time now! We have one in the camper and I will definitely replace our house one with this type of mattress eventually it is awesome.
jess says
We needed to replace our mattress but could not really agree on what we wanted.. we compromised and purchased a 4 inch gel topper and that has worked great for the past year and a half!
Cindy says
We had the memory foam mattress from Costco and had to take it back after quite awhile, like 6 months or more! My husband and I have never had our backs ache so bad. As soon as we we went back to a traditional, firm mattress we were fine.

Iāve been married more than 20 years so my HH said it was time for us to grow up and get a real bed and bedroom set. We went to the mattress store by the mall. They have you lay on mattresses for 5 minutes each so you can get the ārealā feel of them. I donāt have back problems, but when we left that store I was in pain and hobbling around for two days. I could tell the memory foam was especially horrible for me and caused most of my problem. Please try before you buy the memory foam!
We bought a purple mattress in the end and have been happy. The mattress store prices were 3.5x more expensive and uncomfortable to boot! Good luck!

I second the Purple mattress. Our foam mattress was comfortable but so hot. The Purple mattress is amazing. We’ve had ours for a few months and I still am so excited to lay down on it at night.

We bought a Sealy iComfort for a pretty penny last spring with our tax return and I absolutely hate it! I would sleep on any of my kidsā mattresses if I could. My husband seems to think otherwise and loves the mattress. He is a night-sweater and thinks it keeps him cooler, but he still feels like a furnace to me. I guess we are all different. I honestly feel claustrophobic on it, like the gel memory foam or whatever it is, is swallowing me. I just donāt like it conforming to my body contours and surrounding me, I feel like Iām going to suffocate and I canāt get out. I also think it is more maintenance than a regular mattress. I am convinced absorbs allergens or whatever into the gel foam and you canāt get them back out when you vacuum it. Our mattress had the worst chemical smell for the first few months too, but that finally left.
Gina says
I had the same problem. The mattress is great for a couple of months and then I felt like I was being swallowed up. but there’s a happy ending. My husband Cut 2 plywood boards one for each side of our bed and slid it between the mattress and the box spring. For some reason the firmness of the plywood under the mattress made the mattress firmer and heavenly!!! I was about to get rid of the mattress after 6 months but now I’ve been sleeping on it for 2 years and love it!

I love my foam mattress (no gel, might be regular foam no memory). I grew up with one that lasted forever. When if was time to replace the Costco mattress my husband brought into the marriage we went back to foam. Get one with a decent return policy if you’re not sure. We got a Caspar which gave us a couple months to decide if we wanted to return it. I can’t imagine how you would get it back in the box to return, so I’m glad we like ours.
Carrie says
Casper will donate the mattress to a local (to the buyer) organization that usually picks it up. No way those mattresses are getting back into the box!
I have a Casper in my guest bedroom and my guests love it. I sleep on it when I’m sick and I also really like it. I have a Healthy Back all foam in the master. We love it and have had it for 7 years. We’ll probably get another Casper when it’s time to replace since they are cheaper and are delivered free.

Most box mattress places will have you donate it if you don’t like it. We bought ours from nest bedding and they have the same policy as Casper. Wasn’t sold on it after a few weeks and let them know so they sent out a free mattress topper….it solved that problem. Great bed!

Our mattress-shopping-experience was a nightmare!!!! The first BeautyRest Black was defective, as something shifted inside and it felt different right down the center of the mattress. Thankfully, Macy’s refunded the full price to us. The next two mattresses were equally poor. Trying a mattress for such a short time in the store is not the same as sleeping on it night after night. Four months into our experience, we would have GLADLY taken back our 10+ year old mattress, but it had been carted away! Again, thankfully, even though the store claimed to allow ONE mattress trade, they allowed us two trades–this fourth mattress we have to keep. It has taken just over one year for it to feel comfortable. During first 6 months we couldn’t wait to get out of bed in the morning; we were sore more days than not. We both had to get new/different pillows, which made things a bit more comfortable. The best part of the whole deal is the very thin, waterproof gel topper. The store required us to purchase a waterproof mattress protector in order to be able to exchange the mattress (which we did!) In the past, I have never been able to have a piece of “plastic” on my mattress: too sweaty!!! But this one feels cool in the Summer, which I love, and does not crinkle like the cheap waterproof protectors. It was the store’s high-end protector, priced around $200 and it has been worth every penny. I did a lot of research before mattress shopping, regarding what materials are inside of a mattress. What I discovered quickly led to me excluding memory foam and several well-known name brands. Mattress shopping? Good Luck!!!!

If someone has an item in decent condition around here, they just park it by the curb for anyone to pick up. Why put it in the trash?
We also have FreeCycle and some online auctions for “stuff”; however, I realize some people may not want to meet strangers anywhere for an exchange.

I love my “box” memory foam mattress purchased at Costco in September. With discount I paid $400.
I used the Costco website to navigate all the mattress options and choose the right one for us. Waited for a discount and swooped in and got it. The old mattress was placed on Offerup for free and boy did my phone blow up with people wanting it. Good news the person who ended up with the old mattress was a young man who had moved out here for a job and had been sleeping on the bedroom floor.

I have The Loom & Leaf Luxury Memory Foam Bed. http://www.loomandleaf.com My husband and I love it! . The company offers a 120-day home trial. Whenever we sleep on hotel beds or at our parents house we are always so eager to get back home and into our own bed.

I did a lot of online reviews looking for a foam mattress because I like a firm mattress- I settled on Tuft & Needle and have been thrilled- I didnāt even know my back was hurting on my 12 year old spring mattress until suddenly my back didnāt hurt on my new T&N mattress and it was amazing. T&N and most other foam mattress companies will refund your money and arrange for a charity to pick up the mattress if you donāt like it- so give one a try if you want- you can even keep your old mattress around the house until you decide you love a new one so you donāt feel stuck!
Melissa says
We are also Tuft & Needle converts – bought it a couple years ago and we really have absolutely no complaints – I thought I would not enjoy foam type mattress because I had tried them at mattress store and felt like I was sinking in and hated that feeling but this is form and supportive and so comfy – I also appreciated the companyās explanation for why they donāt offer deals and sales – they calculate how much it costs to make and keep employees paid fairly and enough profit to keep going, and just offer a fair price that never changes – and I do feel itās a fair price – I think $700 for our King? Really the best mattress

*firm (my form)

I was just wondering, do you ask before you take or just take it out of the garbage? Just curious.:)

no judgement either, haha

Just be forewarned that sexytimes are difficult with tempurpedic/memory foam mattresses! Haha.

We’ve have one of the memory foam toppers from Costco for a few years & love it! It’s about 3 inches thick & want to say it was under $200. My hubby has had 5 back surgeries & it was a game changer for him. Well, for me also. We all know if one doesn’t sleep, the other doesn’t.
Michelle says
We have a $5000 yes 5 thousand dollar tempurpedic in one room and an $800 Costco foam mattress that literally came in a box and gradually unfolded itself in about an hour . We love it and wish we had never spent the $5000 on other one!

We have a Sleep Number bed that is 15 years old and still going strong. Each side is independently controlled so it can be made firmer or softer, which is nice if you hurt your back or hip. No turning the mattress, no problem with sheets not fitting, all the covers can be washed etc. We have one in our guest room and many of our guests have purchased one of their own. I believe it comes with a 30 to 90 day return period.
Carrie says
I slept on a Sleep Number at an Airbnb house for a few nights. I tried it on all different settings but it never felt like it changed.
AlysonRR says
We have 3 Comfortaire mattresses, the original “airbeds”. Sleep Number was started by people from Comfortaire who didn’t think Comfortaire was charging enough.
We love these mattresses! We get the next to lowest price model and add a memory foam topper and they’re perfect – still firm, but soft enough to cushion my arthritic knees and my kids bony bodies, lol. My husband likes a much softer bed than I, so we both get what we want.
There’s a 30 day return policy – it all packs up in a box – and a 20 or 25yr warranty. We had to get an air bladder replaced after 8yr and a pump replaced after 15yr and just paid shipping, if I recall. Two of our mattresses have lasted 20yr; the third is only 17yr old and still going strong.
AlysonRR says
Oops – never mind. I’m sure they’re still great beds, but Comfortaire has been bought out by Sleep Number / Select Comfort and their prices show it!!! I just wish we’d bought our next replacement before that happened š

TempurPedic. I don’t think there is anything better!
Kat says
I’ve had a dense foam mattress for about four years. From the first second I laid on it, it was heaven. No matter how much I ache, as soon as I hit that mattress, I feel no pain and am almost instantly asleep.
Mine has a softer side and a harder side if I flip it over. I didn’t like the hard side the first night. Flipped it over and….ahhhhhhh. I’ll never go back to any other mattress. And, no, it doesn’t leave an indent, and I don’t sink down into it hardly at all – just a little bit, and it’s just enough.
Mable says
I got a Tempur-pedic when they first came out, and even threw in the money for an adjustable frame that lets me sit up or put my feet up or both at the same time. The prices have come down; when I bought it almost 16 years ago it was over $5000 for a twin bed and we needed two that we hooked together to make a king sized bed. The bed is miraculous. I would pay $10,000 per year if I had to replace it each year. No more back pain ever. The worst part is that when you sit up and then stand up you can turn around and see how big your butt is because it takes a few minutes for the memory foam to forget it was home to your big arse for 8 hours.
Lisa says
I am a side/back sleeper. Two years ago we were considering replacing our 20+ year old mattress/box spring (that we love) because I was waking up every morning with painful hips. A friend suggested the MyPillow mattress topper made in Minnesota. We got one and have not had any aches, pains or stiffness in the morning since. Check it out at MyPillow.com before making a decision.
Karen says
We kept our box spring and bought a king size mattress from Costco (in stock at the store). It was a little firm so we added our 3″ gel topper that we already had and it is perfect. You can pull out the mattress to test it in the store. They are against the back wall of the optical dept.
Heather says
We bought a California King Tuft and Needle mattress two years ago that showed up on the door step in a box. We still like it. Research the different types before buying a mattress. Our mattress is harder than a memory foam and you don’t get hot while sleeping.

Had to just comment further on this post, we are in Portugal for the winter and walking our dogs through Albufeira, one particular bin just draws me! Three days ago some great childrens games in perfect condition, taken and donated to a local family whose kids have nothing, then brand new microwave cookware and a very good condition plastic storage box. Kept the cookware as I have some identical that I use thatās getting very tired, and plastic storage container is great for recyclables and easier than a bag for us here on the campsite as we can keep it outside without it blowing away. Then today, six plastic garden chairs all but one in perfect working order and not at all brittle, scrubbed up brilliantly, a friend on the campsite lives here permanently and is glad of the extra chairs for her visitors. What a haul just this week! I though of you and Mrs HB.
