{For part 1, go here}
On one hand, the man is a Saint for putting up with all my crazy design ideas. On the other hand, he is crazy for the way he implements them.
All I can say is… DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME.
Originally all I wanted to do was get rid of the old {and lightless} ceiling fan in the former master bedroom {now art studio}.
I really didn’t even care what it was replaced with as long as there would be plenty of light for me during the long {and sometimes} dark winters here in Maine.
I even wrote “Replace Light Fixture” on a sticky note before I left for my research trip to Fair Isle back in January giving him full reign to pick something else.
But when I came back from my trip, the sticky note was still up on the mirror so it was then that I decided to take the matter into my own hands and pick out a light fixture on my own.
Months went by without me finding anything I had liked at the big box stores, and then a catalog came in the mail and I thought I had found the perfect {albeit insanely overpriced} dandelion light fixture.
It was big, bright, and beautiful. But the more I thought about it the more I decided it was too showy for the space. Too grand.
And then a few weeks ago I was browsing Home Depot online and came across a big capiz shell chandelier and thought… maybe.
I sat with the idea for a few days. Then showed my husband, and then ordered the thing.
And yesterday he installed it.
All 10 million pieces of it. 😉
And I love it.
It’s light and bright and big and beautiful and the perfect thing for a room with high ceilings and wooden beams in a house along the coast.
A little flashy yes, but fun and unexpected too.
Next up, a fresh coat of paint.
But I think I’ll wait a few weeks before I tackle that project. Right now all I want to do is enjoy the light {inside and out}.
Here’s to another calm and productive weekend,
Peace Out.

Oooooooh! Aaaaaaah! Lovely light. 🙂
(Glad the HH is all right and survived that ladder contraption!!)

Yikes! I was thinking the same thing when I saw that picture. The light is lovely, though!

Wow…your room is huge! It will be so great! Love the light fixture…so fun! Now…here is my observation! I thought your husband on the ladder on two tables was so scary! Hope he had the brakes set on the rolling table. And bending backwards to get the cobwebs! OMG! But…I love all your space. Also…thanks for the glimpses of your new rug. Love it!
Carrie says
Love that room! The high ceiling and beams and all the space. The ladders on the tables, NUTS!!! 🙂
Pauline in Upstate NY says
Second that on the ladders, though the first word out of my mouth was “WHOA…” All’s well that ends well, right?? (And it looks great!)
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. I nearly passed out when I saw the ladder on the tables. CRAZY!
Susan F. says
I actually had the hot, cold, hot, cold adrenaline flash when I scrolled down to that photo. I might have had a heart attack if my husband had tried something like that!
*Thank goodness your husband is o.k.* 🙂
Christie says
Looks beautiful, nice work! I love to see a project come to fruition.
J in OH-IO says
We have a family saying when doing questionable/crazy things like ladders on tables, “HOW did this Emergency happen?!” Glad all ended well and you gave fair warning “don’t try this at home”. Oh my! HaHa!
The light is lovely and really goes well with your coastal theme and room – you have great taste and decorating ideas. So bright and pretty- happy you are enjoying the fruits of all your hard work.

OSHA called….they’re concerned about that table/ladder set up…lol
The light looks great!

This won’t solve the ladder antics for installing the fixture and eventually replacing the bulbs, but we have a 14 foot telescoping pole for dusting our tall ceilings. I’m sure my husband would try to scale the walls rock-climbing style otherwise.

As someone who hates heights, I almost had a panic attack looking at those ladders.
Patti Vanderbloemen says
I have a love/hate relationship with vaulted ceilings – grabbing dust bunnies, changing light bulbs, etc. when scaffolding is not available is the hate relationship.
He did a wonderful job! Looks beautiful!
Lindsey says
In horror, I showed my husband the picture of your guy on a ladder balanced on two tables. His response? “Looks stable to me.” Men.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yep.

Husband set up a similar contraption to paint the gables of our three story house. I had to run to the hardware store, so before I left, I gave the littles who stayed home a refresher on how to call 911.

My dad dislocated his foot from his leg after it got caught in the rung of a ladder when he fell trying to reach something, so I have a very big bias against tricky ladder positions. He had spent a good portion of his career on ladders and had never had an issue. I have known a few people with ladder accidents and fatalities over the years as it comes with the industry, but sometimes the right equipment is a better investment than improvising or compromising stability. It only takes once and ladder accidents can be nasty. I am honestly surprised he did not do research on buying a larger ladder capable of the task as he seems to research a lot of tractors, winches, etc.

Great light for the space. I love the sneak peak at the progress on the giant bird rug. It’s going to be so beautiful!
Michelle of Ephrata says
Looks like something my husband would do. Or maybe has already done. Haha. Oy.
Kippy says
Eek on the ladder arrangement. However he did dust the cobwebs off the ceiling while he was there!
Mary Keen K says
Mavis, I was reading along and getting into your description and enjoying it and then I saw the two tables and my heart stopped. Oh my!! Men how do they come up with those ideas?? I am so glad it all worked out.
Dianne says
How is your hubby’s neck? I would imagination that it will be sore today. That was a lot of work hanging those shells. I love the light, so 70’s, but I wouldn’t want to clean it. Enjoy your room and make something special in that AGA stove for him. : )
Judi Y. says
I love your light!! Your room is so beautiful!!
I’ve done the same thing with a ladder and one time had to stack two tables on top of each other with the ladder on top. Sometimes it’s the only option.
Melonie K. says
The light fixture is amazing!
I’m glad to not be the only one gasping at the ladder – I’m NOT showing my husband and son, they’d love it. 😉
Diana near Atlanta says
So, to paint the room, will you be renting a scaffolding rig? Unless you want another episode of “Maine Redneck”, lolol, you might want to consider it. That setup with the tables looks like something most of the men here in Georgia would do. Heck, who am I kidding, many women would as well.
Light fixture is beautiful and fits in with your decor wonderfully.
Kimberly Vassar says
Your room is beautiful and that glimpse of the large hooked rug in progress…so yummy!

That ladder on the two tables was scary. To me that picture had emergency visit written all over it! I glad there was not an accident!
