Turning The Old Master Bedroom Into A Rug Hooking Studio – Part 1
A neat and tidy place to work on all my rug hooking projects. Whether this be kits I’m making, patterns I’m drawing out, wool I am cutting in preparation to hand dye, or rugs I am actively hooking… A space to do all those things…
That’s what I’m after.
I keep telling myself {and the HH} that if we could just turn the once former master bedroom into a proper {and highly organized} rug hooking studio, our house would be totally clean and organized again and it wouldn’t look like an episode of hoarders in here anymore.
There wouldn’t be anymore stacks of wool on the dining room table because I wouldn’t need to fold them there anymore… I’d have a long {counter height} table in the studio to fold, stack and bundle wool.
There wouldn’t be anymore half completed rugs and piles of wool strips in the guest room {where I used to sit and watch movies and work on rugs in the evening} because I’d have a dedicated space in the new studio to hook all night if I wanted to.
No more vacuuming basically every day because of all the wool dust floating through the house because of all the miscellaneous bits of wool everywhere!!!
One room… One big room… And all the proper work tables and shelving… That’s all I need.
Well… We’re getting there.
Yesterday my husband pulled up all the carpet {and padding and tack strips} and swept the floor and holy cannolis people, it looks better already. He even assembled all my new tables!
This weekend the plan is to get everything that doesn’t need to be in there {extra furniture, random art supplies that I don’t use anymore} and all my wool properly sorted and into specific bins.
Having your own art studio {or craft room, whatever you want to call it} is sort of a wild idea, but then again, it’s better than having your projects strewn all over the house.
A dedicated space for a dedicated task… Why it took us so long to figure this out is pretty funny to me.
But then again, I suppose most people’s hobbies haven’t slowly taken over their lives. And anyway… Who needs a big bedroom? All you do is sleep in there anyway.
I’d much rather have a big room full of wool than a big room to sleep in… But that’s just me.
So here’s to another busy and productive weekend. 😉

How exciting! We finally finished our basement and we have a huge amount of empty space. I have some ideas, but we will see what happens. I have to finish setting up shelving and doing the storage area first. We downsized significantly before moving and I am really liking having less. I am involved an organization that is doing a fundraiser garage sale this Saturday, so it is nice to always have a way to sell unused stuff and make money for an organization I am passionate about.

Dedicated, functional spaces for things really do make life easier! In terms of hobbies and craft stuff though, I’m actually in the process of doing a bit of the opposite. I’ve been packing things up or giving them away to make room for dedicated play spaces throughout the house. I just added a ball pit to the kitchen, and we’re planning to add a slide in the basement. Replacing the guest room with a playroom was such a game changer that we realized having mini play spaces throughout the house would be amazing.

I have a craft room (was previously a bedroom – pulled up the rug and put down tile) and it has:
• Table with sewing machine
• 4 bookcases that hold craft supplies, books and office supplies
• Tall cabinet for my Etsy inventory
• Desk (where I pay the bills and have my morning quiet/devotion time)
• Long crafting table (holds the upcoming projects that I will be working on)
• Filing cabinet (holds the printer on top)
• Rolling cart (typically used as a small kitchen island) – inside the cart holds all my “machines” (Cricut, binding machine, etc), and the top of the cart is my “shipping station”.
The room has a small walk-in closet where I keep craft supplies that aren’t used as often, as well as all my boxes, padded envelopes, etc. Everything is sorted and organized and pretty easy to find (most of the time . . .). But, when I crochet, I do that in my recliner in the living room. I have 2 small bins tucked under the end table by the recliner for whatever project I am working on – they are out of the way and out of sight (unless you are sitting in my recliner). If I did my crocheting in the craft room, my hubby would never see me . Can’t wait to see your art studio all set up!

I’m with you. The “American Dream” of a huge Master bed/bath is lost on me. $$ signs run before my eyes and what that $ does for me instead 🙂
Happy Hooking 🙂

I have a dedicated room to my pillow business and half of the garage, and part of the office! My four machines and rolls of fabric are all in half of our garage.
The one room I also use has shelves of completed pillows, and pillow forms. I have the ironing station set up, and all the boxing supplies organized along another wall. Then the last area is a photo studio with three tall photo lights with shades, a camera on a tripod, and a table with photo paper on the wall and the top of the table. That really helps make the photos consistent.
Then I have a desk in the office with the laser printer, shipping labels, and my lap top. I also have a dedicated file for all of my business papers for taxes. I still do use the kitchen island to do all of my cutting, and have a drawer with all my cutting supplies. I like having everything with a home and all organized.

Wow! Keep all the ideas for creative spaces coming! I am currently cleaning out our guest room to be my craft room but I never thought to also use it for my eBay station and other projects. I can now clean up corners all over the house!!! Luckily my son is moving overseas for 2 years and wants me to store his Ikea storage units (2) and his kitchen island which will be perfect in this craft area and I can see if I like them before purchasing my own.

You have enough land to put up an awesome She Shed and have all your projects in it. I think it would be awesome and your HH would love having the house as a house plus with a big guest room all your followers could book a room for a weekend. HA, HA

I agree with the large bedroom. Complete waste of space. Who needs it, like you said, we only sleep in there. I turned our never used sitting room into my craft studio. I love it and everything is in the room. It’s quite large. I’m sure your room will be perfect for you!
Can’t wait to see it finished!

My mom has always had a sewing room. For awhile it doubled as my brothers bedroom. But it was known as the sewing room. For now I have a corner … until the kids leave home

The floor looks really nice except for that one section. Any good ideas? Ignore it?
