I was out watering the garden this morning and noticed the wood pallet gardens I planted awhile back are now thriving. Time sure does fly when you are having fun {or have a lot of garden chores}. I had originally planned to stand the strawberry pallet upright when I planted it. But I’m really happy I have it laying on the ground now.
I’ve been able to create a little garden within a garden with the 6 wood pallets the Handsome Husband found for me. Although I have plenty of room to expand and to create new garden beds, it takes time.
Using recycled wood pallets as mini garden boxes has been a huge time saver that’s for sure.
As lettuce season starts to wind down, I’ll need to start to look for more warm weather crops to grow in them. I wonder if I could grow a few zucchini plants in one of the pallets. Do you think the root system would be to big for a small pallet? Hmmm. I’ll need to look into that idea a little more.

i worried about the depth for squash root systems, so ended up filling and planting the pallets vertically right from the get go, figuring that the roots would kind of head downwards. they seem to be doing pretty well so far! i have one pallet left and a lot of strawbs, so figure i’ll just set that one flat.
i also ended up planting a squash in about 1 cu ft of dirt instead an old dead tree stump in my front yard. that seems to be thriving too!

What would you recommend planting now? I want to start one but have no idea what I should be planting.

Beans, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkins and tomato plants. And corn too if you have the room.

my strawberry pallet was just planted about 3 weeks ago with bare root plants, so it’s just getting started, and is not quite vertical. However I think I will lay it flat, hard to control the amount of water to all plants.

I was going to plant in a found palette but some websites caution against growing edibles this way since you don’t know what the wood might leech into the soil, to the plant, to the food.
I have some sprouted potatoes and trying celery in garden. Haven’t picked up cherry tomatoes yet and another plant to fill in the 1/4 that is empty.

Luckily I was able to find heat treated pallets {vs chemically treated ones} and I know where they came from so I feel fine about it. Good luck on your garden this year, cherry tomatoes are my favorite.

Hello,
I hace recently built a vegetable bed from re-claimed pallet wood.
Only to discover online that this might not of been the safest thing to do.
Have you had any issues with chemicals leaching from the wood into your crops and effect you / your plants?
