The week when the HH and I were picking up our bread order from Tinderhearth Bakery at their special Saturday mobile location in Belfast, as he got out of the car to get our bag, I looked out the window and noticed a drive thru hot dog stand across from us and was like, WOW, that’s unusual.
I mean, have YOU ever seen a drive thru hot dog stand before? But hey, this is Maine and there are a lot of small businesses here that you’d never see anywhere else so who knows, maybe it wasn’t so unusual after all.
Yada yada yada… a few days later we were out running errands and we spotted another Wasses hot dog stand but this time it was in Rockland, Maine. And so without any hesitation, we pulled in and ordered some lunch.
Talk about a simple menu!
All they sell are weenies, chips and drinks. THAT’S IT! And, get this, Wasses is only open 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. Never in a million years would I think a business plan like that would work, but apparently it does because they’ve been around forever! While we were there eating our lunch, 7 other cars pulled in to place orders.
I had a chili dog with raw onions and the HH had a hot dog with grilled onions and mustard.
When he was getting out of the car to order our lunch I told him to grab a bag of Fritos… Because you can’t have a chili dog without Fritos, right?
Lunch for two {2 weenies, a bag of chips to share and a Dr. Pepper for the HH} came to a whopping $8.75. What a deal! I think it’s safe to say we’ll be back.
So, if you live in Maine and are looking for an inexpensive lunch, or you’ll be traveling through the state some time in the future, be sure and stop by Wasses. The place was AWESOME!
Have a great day everyone,
~Mavis

My step Mom used to love Hot Dogs. She passed away last year at 101, and grew up in Tenants Harbor, Maine. Some of her favorites were…Maine Blueberries, Baked Beans, Hot Dogs, Scallops, and Ice Cream. Then again, she hated Beets!

We have a lot of hot dogs stands here in our SC town but the drive thru one makes us drool every time we pass it and there is always a line of cars all the way around the building. Ours all have FF.

Lana, where in SC do you live? I’m a SC native, but have lived in Phoenix, AZ for 29 years and moved back home to SC a couple of years ago. I haven’t seen any hot dog stands in Columbia yet. If you know of any, please let me know. Now I want a hot dog too!
Rebecca says
I’m in Lexington, SC and we don’t have any here that I know of.

This sounds like the kind of hot date my hubby and I would like.
We have a low thrill threshold.

Way back when in Wichita, Kansas, I remember the Dog ‘n’ Shake drive-through. I just looked it up and it’s still going strong! It’s been there for 70 years according to their website, with several locations all in Wichita. https://www.dognshake.com/ I just read that it was started by a Wichita couple on their way home from church in 1948, since they were in the mood for that and there was no place to go!

I was raised in RI and love those hot dog buns, can’t find them in AL. Also those buns are fabulous to use for Lobster Rolls. When you have hot dogs at home, try lightly grilling the buns, spread with butter on the outside. Yum.

Hi Mavis:
Back in the late 60’s when my husband and I were dating in high school,
a Der Weinerschnitzel opened in our town in Southern California. It had a drive through, which back then was a pretty unusual concept. The only other drive through was In N’ Out Burger which was right across the street. Many a date night was to pick up hot dogs or burgers and take them to the Drive In. Good Times!
Marilyn says
A newly built Der Weinerschnitzel recently opened in Fife, Washington! Only the drive through is open right now, but when we were there yesterday business was steady. My husband ate 5 dogs, he had been craving them!

Mavis I look forward to reading your emails every day- thanks for sharing your day and great information-Prayers for good health for you! And my husband and I had chili dogs for lunch just today! We had chili, diced tomatoes, dill pickle relish, mustard and cheese on ours! One of our fav lunches here in South Texas!

Mavis, my nephew and his wife live in Rockland and both times we have gone to a drive in ice cream place that is fabulous! Wish I could remember the name of it. I will have to ask him. They have tons of flavors!
Jude says
Here in Cincinnati we top our chili dogs with finely shredded cheddar cheese with or without raw diced onions & mustard, and call it a Coney. But I prefer it topped with a half & half mix of cheddar & habanero cheese, called an Extreme Coney. Yum!

You forgot to mention the yummy grilled flavor of Wasse’s excellent hot dogs. I used to go there for lunch every week, but stopped due to COVID-19 concerns caused by almost no one in line wearing a mask. Come on Mainers, we’re better than that.
The ice cream place Vivian is thinking of is probably Dorman’s. Have you covered them as a local favorite?
