The HH was out of town on a 6 day business trip last week so I only had Monkey Boy and Lucy to cook for. Monkey Boy is working full time now and typically doesn’t take the time to eat breakfast and he buys his lunch everyday {which I think is a waste of money} so all I really needed to do was make dinner and keep Lucy the puggle princess fed. It was an easy peasy week {albeit a lonely one}.
I had big plans to get a ton of work done on the blog and around the house but instead I lounged around in my pj’s most days baking, napping, reading and doing a wee bit of gardening. Imagine that. 😉
I did manage to leave the house once though and I stopped by Fred Meyer while I was out running errands. I didn’t pick up much, but I did buy a few things.
Milk $0.99 per half gallon, cheese $1.99, butternut squash $0.69 a pound {what a deal!} grapes $1.28 a lb, tuna $0.50 each {limit of 6 per transaction} 5 mushrooms {not pictured} and Ritz Crackers $2.
More tuna. $3.00
Here’s a tip: If the coupon says limit 6 per transaction, buy 6, put them in your car and then walk back into the store and buy 6 more. 🙂 $0.50 a can. C’mon, that’s a great deal!
I made a ham dinner at the beginning of the week and then it was smooth sailing…
Chicken and Rice {with lots of leftover chicken I sliced and tossed into the freezer}
What goes good with pj’s and napping? Earl Grey biscotti and …
Gingerbread pear cake {I’ll post the recipe later this week}.
I harvested a bunch of tomatoes and made more pasta sauce. It was too hot to can the sauce so I bagged it up into quart sized bags and froze it instead.
Pasta and toast. My son’s favorite meal on the planet.
Not every week needs to be spectacular.This past week was easy and low maintenance. And it was AWESOME.

I quit my job 4 months ago, i do have a husband that works:) and very supportive, so i was worried we were taking a 60,000 a year cut in pay, i love your blog, i have learned so much, when i was working, we would buy a Costco rotisserie chicken and have for lunch and then dinner and i would throw the rest out, now i take that chicken and turn it into a weeks worth of meals for both hubs and I….its amazing…i have learned so much from your blog. I have saved so much money and we are actually putting about the same in our savings account, we are just lacking what i was putting into my tsp retirement account….so for my sanity and health, and at 54 still young enough to enjoy not working…don’t worry hubby will be retiring in 3 1/2 years at 55, he is 2 years younger, so basically doing something right:) but you have even helped me miss frugal to be even more frugal and repurposing:)

Wow .50 a can for tuna , I would have bought tons , here in Canada I am lucky to find name brand for around a dollar, my son eats it like crazy and I do too. I am hoping to put up about 30 quarts of marinara sauce . Have a great week Mavis and Lucy princess

That is a good price on tuna. I found it on sale this week for .59 a can and thought I was doing good. I picked up a bag of small seashell pasta and I’m going to make a tuna/pasta salad using two cans of tuna, the cooked pasta, some diced celery, a little chopped green onion from the garden, mayo and some seasonings, salt and pepper and maybe a dash of dried dill. I don’t put boiled eggs in mine but some people do. It will give me some quick and easy lunches for a couple of days. I LOVE cold tuna/pasta salad. Sometimes I put small cubes of cheddar in the salad.

Love your posts! I’ve been wondering how you’re making the transition to a (sort of) empty nester. That must be a big adjustment, but it looks like you’re handling it well.

Out here in the west we have a grocery chain called Smiths. I believe it’s a Kroger affiliate. Twice a year they have a “case lot sale” where tuna is $.50 a can, but you have to buy a case of 48 for $24. I usually try to buy 4-6 cases to last me the 6 months.

That is a great price on tuna. I live in a northern suburb of Minneapolis, MN and our local store has tuna for $.69 a can and that’s with a coupon. Limit of 10. I have gotten many ideas from your posts and also would like to thank you for all of your great recipes etc. I also love the pictures you share of your gardens and your cute little Lucy.
