Is it just me or are the grocery deals better in the fall than the rest of the year? I’m still waiting for all the baking supplies to go on sale, but I love stocking up on squash and apple deals while I wait for deals on butter and sugar.
This past week I popped into a little market called Harbor Greens. They usually have a few really good deals each week and this time around one of the deals was caramel dip for $1.00! Seriously, isn’t this stuff like $3 in the grocery stores?
Harbor Greens also had pineapples on sale for $1 each, cantaloupe $1 each, sweet potatoes $0.79 cents a pound {I didn’t get any because they were too big} and acorn squash 2 for $1.50. I think the acorn squash were my favorite deal.
Something to think about… if a store is selling produce by the item and not the weight… go for the biggest one you can find. The acorn squashes I selected were twice the size as the others and weighed in at 4lbs. 8 ounces and 4 lbs. 5 ounces. That works out to about $0.16 a pound!!! Not too shabby of you ask me.
Fred Meyer milk and orange juice was on sale again last week for $.99 per half gallon.
Remind me to never again do my grocery shopping with the HH along. I beg you. He always finds stuff we don’t need. $35.84.
Tasty Bite Lentils …. holy cats are they ever delicious over rice. In fact I think I could eat those lentils everyday for lunch if I had too. Looking at the ingredient list the recipe shouldn’t be to hard to figure out.
The week started off with a homemade butternut and lentil stew. It was a slight variation of my lentil stew with spinach and pumpkin recipe. We feasted on the stew two nights in a row. And then I got a little lazy.
If it’s a crime to feed your family survival food for an entire week, then handcuff me know because I am going to jail. Bahahaha. I’m sorry but when I’m asked to review a product I take it very seriously.
Do you believe that?
Good.
Because it would be totally tragic if I told you the real reason I fed my family from the Valley Food Storage Grab and Go Bucket all week was because I had better things to do than cook and I and was like… Hey, all I have to do is add water and wait 15 minutes and breakfast, lunch and dinner is served? And I don’t have to cook all week? Why didn’t I think of this sooner?
The HH didn’t even realize we were eating survival food until the 4th day.
Freakin’ awesome if you ask me.
Cooking…it goes in phases.

Please figure out the recipe for the Tasty Bite Lentils and share. They are so good! We like eating them over a baked potato as well. It’s especially good with a dollop of sour cream on top.

I am definitely working on it. I’ll share as soon as I get it right.

I didn’t realize until I did an online chat with Valley Food Storage that all of their meals are vegetarian. I have been a vegetarian (mostly vegan) for 10 years and I was super excited to find out I could eat their food. I’m going to order some as soon as there is a little more wiggle room in my budget. The customer service rep said they were never able to figure out a way to make the meat taste good enough/be shelf stable enough, so they took the meat out years ago. Does HH not mind vegetarian meals? My husband is a meat-eater but eats vegetarian at home unless he is grilling a big ol’ hunk of dead cow for himself.

They take taste super serious, which is another reason I am a huge supporter. The HH does not mind meatless meals. He’s actually pretty great about eating anything I put in front of him. I’m lucky that way. Glad that the meals are going to work for you too.

Ha, it’s crazy to shop with men, but you are still doing well.
If you could figure out the tasty bite lentil recipe, that would be awesome. I love those things. I tried a few times to match the recipe. Never got it close enough.

It’s my new personal goal to figure it out. I’ll post it as soon as I get it right.
