I popped into the Main and Vine store again this morning to check out their bulk section and spotted these giant wheels of parmesan cheese. I wonder if anyone will buy a whole wheel? How much do you think they weigh?
What I picked up at the library this morning:
Diane Keaton: House – She is the only person I follow on Pinterest. I flipped out when I discovered her book today at the library.
Beeswax Alchemy – When I was in Lancaster last month I came across a 3{?} pound wheel of bee’s wax and totally wanted to bring it home. But I’m only buying essential items this year. I’m hoping to find some cool recipes in the book so maybe when I run out of lotion, candles and soap I can make some much needed “essential items.” 😉
Bean By Bean –This is the third time I’ve checked this book out.
Brassicas – Looking for inspiration for the broccoli and cauliflower sitting in my fridge.
Money Secrets of the Amish – Because I love learning new ways to save.
I have the coolest readers.
Thank you Jan from Pennsylvania. The girls LOVE their new scarves.
And a big thanks to Lynda for sending me a copy of What I Stand On. Her son in law is an editor and this is his first book. Cool beans! 😉
Wet wool cooling outside.
Lucy’s most expensive treat to date. {$150 for a replacement!}Naughty, naughty dog.
But adorable, so I forgive her.
Have a great Thursday everyone,

I have found that behind every naughty naughty dog (or cat!) is often a naughty naughty human who failed to secure their treasures. Just saying. 😉
On another note, I’m wondering if those big wheels of parm are real, or just for show. If you don’t mind, maybe you could hop back over there and do some serious sleuthing. Your public (ok, maybe just me) wants to know. 🙂

Poor Lucy! She’s thinking…..WHAT? I ate a CHEW TOY!

Our orthodontist warned us that dogs love to chew retainers!

Also, since I see your pot of dye…..I think you had listed Tom’s River as a book in one of your Amazon deals a couple of weeks ago. Sounded interesting, so I got it. Have you read this book? Makes me wonder what’s in that dye you’re using! Yikes! Chemicals….we are surrounded by them whether we know it or not! If you haven’t read it, you’ve been forewarned!
Mavis says
Oh no! I don’t know if I want to know. Maybe ignorance really is bliss?!
Carla says
Have to say something that expensive should not be where the pet can get it. I’m still learning that lesson with one of my cats.
Mavis says
Right you are. I certainly don’t blame Lucy and am kicking myself for leaving it there. 🙁
Lisa says
Well… at least it was your dog that did it. I ruined mine by dropping it in the toilet then boiling it to sanitize. Boiling it warps it so it does not fit anymore! I had only myself to blame. 🙁

My dogs have stolen/ate THREE of my night guards. The cost 20 apiece! Freaking dogs.

How hard has it been to not buy extras this year? Do you miss the deliveries at your door? I understand your goal of not buying extras, but I worry that you may become discouraged, feel left out, or feel deprived when you see something you would really like. At some point you may need to give yourself permission to buy something extra. I would really hate to see you lose that beautiful smile and wonderful attitude.
Give Lucy a hug and learn from your mistake. Expensive, but I thought it would cost more.
Christy says
I do “no spend” months and sometimes longer. You find that other things can bring you joy. Instead of shopping, I bake something and take it to a neighbor, or crochet a granny square afghan with scrap yarn, or pack a picnic. Instead of going out with friends, invite them over for coffee or have a potluck dinner. So many ways to enjoy your life without buying things. I think Mavis will do fine!

Speaking of Beeswax… I have a really easy recipe for Lotion Bars that I use for myself- and they make an excellent gift!
I buy a 1 pound block of beeswax at Michael’s when they have a 50% coupon – it is around $8.50. BUT lasts a long time!
I have 12 silicone hearts that I bought ages ago to make cupcakes (or chocolates) You can use anything – but I like the hearts. They are a perfect size. Ice cube trays are a nice size, too.
Lotion Bars
1/2 cup beeswax (melted measurement)
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup grapeseed oil (you can use olive oil – I like grapeseed)
Melt the beeswax in a double boiler- I just use a pan inside a bigger pan- medium heat. This takes a while.
Remove from heat. Add coconut oil and stir until melted.
Add grapeseed oil. Stir.
Pour into whatever container you choose and set aside until “hardened” This doesn’t take long. Remove from molds in 3-4 hours.
These are lotion bars- so don’t get as hard as soap. They are really nice on the skin. They feel kind of greasy when you apply- but the greasy feeling quickly dissipates 🙂
I gave these as gifts for Christmas and everyone loves them! I have made a few batches.
You can make larger batches- just use equal amounts of oils.

Oh man, they sound awesome! I’m totally making these. Thanks for sharing.

At my local grocery store, one of the deli employees was visibly upset one day. I asked her if everything was ok. She said that one of the other employees had thrown away one of those wheels, because he thought it was junk. She said that it had cost around $2000.
I did a web search and found this one for about $2500 this morning on amazon: “Parmigiano Reggiano, Bonati Riserva Cheese (Whole Wheel)”
Yikes!
Mavis Butterfield says
Wowza!!! $2,000 is a lot of money for cheese.

My brother once bought me a 1/2 wheel of Parmesano Reggio as a Christmas gift. Loved it!
Something I make with cauliflower & broccoli. Aldi’s has an awesome Sun Dried Tomato Pesto. I add a jar to florets. Roast. Delish! Works well with regular pesto too, but the other is a big hit with company.

I read that book “Money Secrets of the Amish” . On you tube I saw a blogger doing a review of it and thought that it looked like an interesting read. It was okay and honestly skipped some of her analyzing of her self because I just wanted to hear stories of the Amish. But I am glad that I read it. Let us know how you like it.
