Seriously. Enough already. I don’t want people staring at me when I have to use the loo.
Please tell me I’m not the only one who finds this annoying.

Nope, I hate it, too. So awkward. The worst situation is handicapped stalls, when the toilet is installed directly opposite of the door gap. I have come across lots of times. Why would anyone do that?!

It is way to gaping for my comfort level.I love the bathrooms on England, esp in the museums. They are like your own little private room, the door goes all the way to the floor and you don’t have to mind the gap in the stalls! 🙂

Family and friends from England are always taken aback by the gaps in the doors in public bathrooms in the US. The are used to doors closing completely, with no gapping along the sides, and which also reach down to the ground. So no nosy toddlers can peer under the door!

Here in the good old USA is all about security… especially in shopping malls, chain restruants and urban metro areas. The malls are worried about theft, the restaurants are worry about drug addicts overdosing in their stores and metro area complexes are worried about terrorist. It’s a sad reality, but that what the western world has become!

It is so the restroom police can verify you are female and in the correct gendered restroom, like the woman that got hassled in the Staples Arena during the Carrie Underwood concert.

I actually think the doors are significantly more narrow than necessary because it creates a greater margin of error for the install. You don’t have to install them as neatly, and you can install them even with never floors/walls.

Hate it!! It’s just terrible!

I would rather have a huge gap if it means they will make the stall big enough that you don’t have to do yoga poses to close the door and not touch the toilet at the same time. Also the location of the toilet paper dispencers and little trash cans in the wrong places. Obviously designed by men and yet with such a small space there are still never enough stalls.

Mavis,
Just to share with you and your family our prayers for peace and healing with your brother. We lost my brother in law in the same manner. The final days with him being able to smile, laugh, pray and just be there are still what get us through those times when we wish he could be with us.
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Unknown.
Blessings,
