Will It Sell? – Driftwood In The Shape Of A Dinosaur.
This morning I listed a one of a kind piece of driftwood in the shape of a dinosaur for sale in my Etsy shop for the unbelievably bargain price of $1,000.
Because seriously, you could hunt every beach in the world 10 times over and never find a piece of driftwood that looks quite like the Tyrannosaurus Rex I found on the rocky shore just outside my backdoor the other day.
The resemblance is uncanny, don’t you think? I mean really, how can you mistake this piece of wonderment for anything else?
Just look at that jawline! And the PERFECT placement of the eye. The teeny little arm, the tail and the feet. It must have taken years {centuries!?} for Mother Nature to work her magic on this piece of gloriousness.
The contorted shape of the dinosaur’s body, like it’s looking around the bend, scoping out its prey.
At a height of roughly 6” tall and 2 ¾” wide this one of a kind beauty also comes artfully arranged in a white gift box that has been padded for safe travels to its new owner.
A true one of a kind piece of natural art, if there ever was one.
Here is my Etsy listing.
So what do you think. Will it sell?
~Mavis
Peggy says
I promise you, any grandma with a Dino loving grandkid and the $$ will buy it in a heartbeat!
Lynda says
I don’t think it will sell. A thousand bucks for a piece of driftwood? You’d have to be mad to buy it. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.
Brianna says
If it sells, then I need to reconsider how I make fun money.
I think with the economic struggles and pressure people are facing, $1000 is a bit excessive. I would reason $50 or even $100, but $1000? No. Although it is abstract art and up the interpretation and eye of the beholder and I have seen boring stuff on the auction block go for big bucks. Remember the burnt toast Jesus or potato chip shapes?
I have a piece of driftwood hugging a river rock in a tote with a few other finds. Perhaps it is worth something?
Jennifer says
My first reaction was no way. However, there are plenty of people with more money than sense and I can easily see some Manhattan/Beverly Hills interior designer looking b for that perfect objet d’art for their client.
$1000, probably not, but I won’t be surprised if it happens.
Tammy says
This is hilarious, and I’m rooting for you to sell it!
Annette says
Off topic but, did they bring you any cool souvenirs from Spain?
Jennifer G says
I vote no and have the opinion is someone pays 1K for a piece of driftwood they have more money than sense. Of course I thought the “organic” box of driftwood you sold was way over priced. This is possibly a midwestern point of view from a frugal person.
Jane says
I vote YES.
Anita says
That is so cool! I think it’ll sell…and probably be bought by someone with waaaay more money than me! 🙂
Patti Vanderbloemen says
While I personally would not buy it, I am not one to judge other people and their reasoning for purchasing ANYTHING…much less declare them senseless.
Mavis Butterfield says
$120,000 for a banana duct-taped to a wall though… That might be a little crazy. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50704136
Tammy a says
Oh my that’s incredible. Never seen anything like that. I vote for several hundred maybe even the thousand because one of a kind and so perfect
Carolyn Rust says
It will sell because Mavis has it on her site. If she can sell rusty coffee cans for $40, she can sell a piece of driftwood for $1000.
Sue S. says
I agree. Some decorator from HGTV will buy it and then charge the client double. So go for it Mavis. If anyone can sell it, you can.
Janie says
It’s most likely one of a kind.
People want to own it.
I say go for it!!!
KC says
I absolutely wouldn’t buy it, but I could envision several possibilities for perfect owners, so it’s more on the “will it be spotted by the right people?” list than otherwise.
For instance, a wealthy couple wherein one member of the couple wants everything to visually mesh with a theme (driftwood, white, etc.) for a calming and sophisticated overall look, and the other really wants some personalization [please can we have a house that doesn’t look like it was designed for the pages of a Pottery Barn catalogue? No? Sigh.] and loves dinos. Then the latter could either negotiate for dino-driftwood or could just… sneak it in there one day, and be privately amused by knowing it’s there and have it be a visual surprise when people look for long enough – which most people don’t – at the display of driftwood.
Or someone else might have a collection of dinosaurs in different materials, but naturally formed driftwood: not something they already have.
Or someone with a vigilant HOA (whose rules allow driftwood but no “representational statues” to be visible from the road) might *really* want to stick a subtle dino in their front garden.
(all situations assume wealth, though, because yeah, you have to be a certain level of rich to have $1000 spare, and a further level of rich for $1000 to be “worth it” to get just the right visual art for something.)

I am getting a kick out of these responses- hilarious! Yes, I think it will sell! Go Mavis! The real question is what will you buy (or have already set your eye on) for your craft room with the money proceeds from the sale of the one of a kind dinosaur drift wood? Curious minds want to know….
Diana says
I can picture someone buying it. My kids call me t Rex as a nickname because they have short arms. They are all tall and I am 5″6″. When I can’t reach something they say let me help t rex. We even have an animated t rex as a lawn decoration for Christmas. So someone with a sentimental attraction would love it.
Ashley Bananas says
Would I buy it? No.
Would someone else buy it? Maybe! lol
Keep us updated.
Sandy says
Oh My Gosh I hope it does sell! That’s fantastic! All us frugal gals have our popcorn popped to see if it goes. You must keep us updated on the progress!
Diane F. says
No way I would spend $1000 for it, but then, what do I know? There are a lot of weird and crazy people ( or should I say “unique individuals”?) that love and appreciate weird and crazy/unique things, so yes, I think it will sell! Good luck!
Cindy Brick says
Sure, it will sell — to the people who see the Virgin Mary in a piece of toast. Find them, and you’ve got it made.
Now I’ll be on the lookout for vegetables “in rude and interesting shapes,” as Blackadder puts it. Maybe I can crank up the price for them, too. Or bananas. (!!!)
(Seriously, Mavis…)
Mavis Butterfield says
I knew you’d love it. 🙂
Mimi says
I don’t know about the price but you just never know. The photos are great! Good luck!
Holley says
My vote is for YES!
Charlotte says
Not a doubt in my mind that T Rex will sell!
Michelle of Ephrata says
My vote is yes! Dinosaurs rock!
Dawn says
This is too funny. I am amazed every day at the things people will pay a lot of money for, so I would never say it won’t sell. You just never know. If it doesn’t you have a really cool piece of driftwood for your coastal garden!
Dianne says
Yes, Mavis, it will indeed sell, for how much, I don’t know. May have to reduce to sell. I think it is beautiful and could be something I think a lot of people may want to have. What a great find! I hope it sells quickly so you can have a great time in Montreal.
Kippy says
If anyone could successfully sell a piece of sculptural driftwood for one K, it would be you! I’m still amazed about the other things you’ve sold, especially the coffee cans.
Ribs B says
It’s out of my price range…but I hope someone buys it.
Off topic:
Where do you purchase your shipping boxes? I sell a few crafts and am on the hunt for nice boxes.
Mavis Butterfield says
Ebay usually has good prices.
Michelle says
1000.00? No. For 100-200 probably
Joan says
If it dos sell and I truly hope it does, yo will have your grocery bill on par lol
Mavis Butterfield says
Yep. 🙂
Ramona says
My question is… Did you find it on the beach laying the direction as in your first photo and say that looks like a T-Rex? Because some of the other photo’s of side views don’t look like a dino so much.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, I found him on the beach face up!
Eileen says
Just checked on Etsy–it’s already in 3 carts! Go Mavis!!

I just called my 13 year old daughter into the room and showed her only the first photo, then asked her a couple questions:
1) What does that look like to you? Of course she said it looks like a T-Rex.
2) How much should it be sold for? Her answer, without hesitation and without seeing anything but the photo- $1000.
Monica B says
It will sell! Such an amazing find and go you for seeing it and listing it!
Emma says
I’m a zoology teacher and this would be an amazing thing to have, but as a teacher, It’s considerably out of my budget. If it sells great, but you aren’t marketing to the everyday person on a budget. I’m not sure if you are shooting for the moon, or truly being absurd.
