Yesterday was a gorgeous day here in Maine with temps nearly hitting 60 degrees! Can you believe it? Finally, we’re getting some warm spring weather like the rest of the world. I worked on the brick flower bed border along the back of the house while the HH dug out giant roots for me and strung party lights over the {soon to be} back patio area. It was a productive day.
On the agenda for today:
- Fill in the flower bed with dirt
- Get started on LAST brick flower bed border along the side of the fence
- Have the HH pull out the junk wood from the compost pile and begin to level that area off {it’s going to take a few days}
- Have a pizza for dinner and go to bed early
Oh yeah, and a giveaway. š

Just answer that one question and you’re entered to win. Life’s pretty complicated sometimes, so I like to keep things simple around here.

Heading out to work in the garden now!

I love the garden markers–they would be so useful in my herb beds.
I added several new raised beds to my backyard and am trying to double my garden production. Peas, potatoes and onions are in and the cool weather plants–lettuce, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower are going. The weather has been unusually warm so I gambled and put some tomatoes in the ground, while others are still in pots.
After losing to slugs and birds for years, I am trying container growing for strawberries. Gardeners are always hopeful that THIS year will be better!
Still planning on lots of beans, peppers and more tomatoes. Seed-buying is addictive.
I enjoy your blog and watching your projects get done.

We started our seeds a few weeks ago & they’re looking great! Tomatoes (5-6 varieties) & shishito peppers get started early at our house. I planted my peas right after St Pats day (direct sow) and we will direct sow squash, cucumber, carrots, & radishes. I am weak and always end up with a few random veggie plants when I wander the garden center lol.
We have 2 gardens-1 @ home that is 4 small raised beds (4×4) & we lease a neighborhood community plot (10×10) that my husband primarily takes care of.
We compost & use it it our gardens/flower beds so my flower beds always surprise us with random volunteer tomato plants, too.
I too enjoy your blog & read every day. I gifted your black cat ornament to my best friend & she loves it!
Diana Spang says
We recently moved and have sun all around the house for the first time in 23 years. Most veggie garden attempts in the past were failed science experiments with the kids. This year, I’ve started a bunch of seeds…pandemics can make one ambitious. We fenced in an area to keep out the multitude of deer and are tilling beds and putting compost over top…plan to try Charles Dowding’s no-till method after this year.
We are planning small crops each of:
Roma and grape tomatoes, eggplant, spinach, different leffuces behind a trellis of peas and beans, peppers, carrots, brussel sprouts, cantaloupe, zucchini, cucumber, cabbage (2-3 if we have room). Husband wants a little annex with corn…and then potatoes in the fall. He also wants a watermelon and pumpkin patch somewhere.
I have am starting seeds for zinnias, Black-eyed Susans, lavender. Plan to direct sow other flowers and see what happens. I am always amazed at what can bloom from those little seeds. Magic each year…until you’re fighting the weeds. Lol Thanks for the constant inspiration. I check in frequently to see how much you accomplish each day…and just shake my head at myself.
We’ve been to Bar Harbor a number of times over the years (and have made coastal stops along the way) to visit friends that live up there. Wonderful memories of some gorgeous vacation spots. We are in SE PA.
Take care. Hopefully the corona hurricane is weak as it passes through your area.

I have a small garden area on the side of my house that I have two raised beds and a small herb garden (mint, lemon balm, hyssop, chives, parsley, basil, rosemary). I also have several galvanized tubs that I will grow tomatoes and peppers in. I have a shady area that I may try and grow sugar snaps peas. The weather hasn’t been great here in Wisconsin. Also last year I had a Japanese beetle invasion that I seemed to be on the losing end. I am planning on treating my beds with either diatomaceous earth or milky spore and hopefully stop them at the grub stage. I detest picking them off but I do. Does anyone know if chickens eat those bugs? I don’t have any but maybe if they did I could convince hubs we need some hens.

I have an urban garden just outside of Boston with lead in my soil so anything edible has to be grown in a container. And I have lots of containers that I picked up at yard sales. So far I plan to plant three varieties of cherry tomatoes, two beefsteaks, rosemary and basil. In the ground I’ll plant pumpkins for decoration only, zinnias, sunflowers and echinacea. Being limited for space, only one pumpkin matured but it was the most gorgeous sage green Jarrahdale pumpkin you have ever seen! I ordered some climbing roses that should be here later this month. I do keep an open mind and when I visit my favorite plant nursery I always come back with plants I couldn’t resist.
Annette L. says

Other than herbs in pots along with tomatoes, I would like to add 2 new things to my list this year…garlic and purple potatoes. I just don’t know the best way to plant them so I am researching possibilities. Thanks Mavis!!! Happy planting!!!

I am a teacher, so usually my garden goes in during the first week of June after I am done with my school year, but I’m getting a good head start this year. I’ve already made Wild Violet Jelly, and am looking towards making dandelion and peony jellies too!
My garden isn’t traditional due to living on the edge of town with my own personal deer who shop locally via my garden…so I have been planting the veggies behind the picket fence in the front, or hidden amongst the petunias…I’ve gotten creative to deter the neighborhood guests!

I went a bit overboard with things this year and ordered a bunch of new seeds in January.
I’m growing 17 different varieties of peppers, some in raised beds and some in fabric grow pots that will be going in my greenhouse. A few of the peppers are for my husband and they are extremely hot (death spiral, carolina reaper, apocalypse scorpion!!). I’m also growing several types of tomatoes and eggplants which will be put in the fabric pots in my greenhouse. I want to have a raised bed herb garden with lavender, basil, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, oregano, lemon balm (potted), sage, chamomile, and mint (potted). I’ve already planted out carrots, kohlrabi, and spinach in raised beds and soon will be planting lettuce, beets, and radishes.
I’m trying a few new things this year, such as blue and yukon potatoes (grow bags), okinawan sweet potatoes (grow bags), blueberries (raised bed), arctic beauty kiwi (planted in the ground next to a big metal arbor/heavy duty old greenhouse frame). Also, purple sprouting broccoli, green and crimson brussel sprouts, crimson kale, shiso, minutina, saltwort, malabar spinach, and cucamelons will be planted in raised beds.
Later, I will be planting bush and runner beans, watermelons, zucchini, sunflowers, cucumbers, and pumpkins. I already have asparagus, strawberries, and chives planted in raised beds which are starting to wake up. There’s quite a bit more, including flowers, but I probably should stop there!
Jaime says
I’ve got about three dozen cloth grow bags from Amazon that I’ve got tomatoes, peppers, and various herbs growing it. I also just got a new delivery of seeds yesterday, and I’m adding a whole bunch more pepper varieties, some okra, summer squash, cowpeas, malabar spinach, and melons in. I’m living in FL and originally from upstate NY, so the year-round growing season is lovely but takes some adjusting to in terms of figuring out what will grow when.
Alison says
I love growing lots of herbs; i.e., Lemon thyme, tarragon, cat nip (for you know who), purple basil, garlic chives, etc. These will be planted in flower boxes for their beauty and smell as you come up the porch. I will also be planting several types of tomatoes in containers (Big Boy, Cherry, and grape), and micro greens in their own little nests.

Just started some seeds to place in my garden plot. Planted cucumbers, peas, zuchinni, squash (They are in pots that will be planted directly into the ground and break down). Potatoes, carrots, corn planted the other day. Oh and some marigolds to fend off slugs!
Colleen says
Already have some peas, lettuce, radishes, and onion sets in the ground. Will be planting tomatoes, green beans, peppers, kholrabi, sweet potates, and zucchini when the soil warms up. I have a beautiful raised bed to do my gardening in.

We are growing lettuce and peas in our newly tilled garden bed (we had some unplanned time at home ). Soon to be supplemented with tomatoes and peppers…

I have a raised garden bed as the bunnies and slugs will get to my crop before I can! Tomatoes, basil, rosemary, and sage. lemon and lime trees in pots!
Olivia says
Hi Mavis! I love your garden markers! This year I am growing tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, herbs, raspberries, carrots, lettuce, spinach, and trying my hand at corn again. Hoping the squirrels donāt get more of my corn than I do like they did the last time I grew it. All of my gardening is done in the ground in beds I dug.

Weāre in Northern Minnesota so are planting season doesnāt start until the middle of May to June. Weāre planting green beans, corn, beets, carrots, zucchini (for the first time), winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and more tomatoes. Weāre planting two honey crisp apple trees, and everything is going into the ground and into this lush beautiful dark earth that Minnesota has. My husband rebuilt an old tractor and heās itching for the snow to melt so he can plow up a good acre of our land and get to planting. Your markers are a wonderful way to keep track of what going where. Happy planting!

I always plant green beans, my favorite vegetable. I direct sow them in my garden bed.

Iām still learning to garden at high altitude, so itās mostly containers and one small raised bed. Weāll plant basil, parsley, cilantro, tomatoes, zucchini and maybe some spinach. Trial and error for now!
Tracy says
We don’t get much sun in our back or side yards due to trees, so we garden in 1/2 wine and whiskey barrels on our deck.
We are/will be growing tomatoes, carrots, radishes, green beans, zucchini, kale, sugar snap & snow peas, bell peppers, basil, oregano, reg and lemon thyme, chives, & tarragon. We might plant a Tien Tsin pepper to replenish our stock we dried.
Thank you for the give away Mavis, Happy Gardening!

Hot diggity, another giveaway to try for! The peas are already planted in one of the raised beds. In the other beds I will plant several tomato plants because my single neighbor man loves the cherry ones, and will also plant cucumbers, Swiss chard, basil, parsley, peppers, broccoli, and carrots. At the end of each of the beds I leave about a six inch section for flowers, usually marigolds.
joy gish says
I am going to plant radishes tomorrow in an in ground garden. My big plan this year is to fence in the area due to living in the country and having Noah’s ark feeding on it last year. The raccoons decimated my little corn patch so I am NOT going to repeat last year!!
Heidi P says
I will be growing squash, beans of all types, radishes, carrots, beets, eggplant, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, spinach and assorted lettuces.I have 16 raised beds plus a large berry patch. I LOVE the berries most. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, Marionberries and my favorite Strawberries. This gardener is getting antsy. Bring on the growing season!
Misty says
A tea garden sounds very lovely š
I also have had trouble with deer who think my garden is a free buffet so we fenced in the area. Now I just have to worry about cabbage moth, squash vine borer, and beetles (Japanese, flea, and cucumber) /sigh
Misty says
Sorry, that was a reply to Sheila which didn’t seem to work correctly.
Julie says
Hi Mavis! Yesterday I got my seeds planted for: cucumber, squash, corn, sunflowers, butternut squash, and zucchini. I’ll grow peas with my strawberries and raspberries once I get that raised bed rebuilt. I have better luck buying tomato plants than growing from seed so I’ll get those eventually.
Karen says
I am growing strawberries in half wine barrels. Iām growing arugula, kale, Swiss chard, Malabar spinach in raised beds. Iāve also got kale and lettuce in another half wine barrel. I have blackberries in the ground. Onions in a pot. And fig, peach, plum, pomegranate and apricot trees in the ground. Also grape vines in the ground. We moved last year too. I had a garden before but this garden is new. So itās all baby stage!
Beth Buck says
We put in a new raised bed this year in addition to our other gardening spots in our backyard. We’re growing Sunflowers, potatoes, three different types of squash, tomatoes, popcorn (!), peppers (I hope – if they come up!). We also got seeds for Charentais melons, something I have been admiring for about ten years now. The seeds sprouted so I hope they will grow into melons.
AJ says
With our newly found free time, we built some raised beds and have already planted tomatoes, sunflowers, corn, pole beans, zucchini, watermelon, cantaloupe, basil, Serrano peppers, pickling cucumbers, carrots and spearmint!

Thanks for this great giveaway!!! Using big containers this year. Have planted or will plant English thyme, Greek oregano, Thai basil, rosemary, cherry tomatoes (sweet 100s, sungold, and yellow pear), chard, lacinato kale, a slicing tomato, Japanese eggplant, cucumber, and lots of mesclun and butter lettuce. With all the the stay at home orders in place and our great farmer’s market unlikely to open. I thought lots of fresh produce might keep me from having to go to the store unnecessarily…. plus everything tastes better when fresh grown.
Lisa Lemieur says
I’m going to plant some heirloom tomato seeds that I ordered in containers on my back deck. I live in NC and our back yard has so much Bermuda grass which totally invaded my old garden. Almost impossible to kill it and it’s too hard on my hand to pull it out! Also plan to grow radishes, basil, cucumbers, and swiss chard!
I love Maine! My son lives in Portland and I can’t wait to get back up there to visit! Thank you Mavis!

Sold my house that had 4 rhubarb plants, raised asparagus bed, multiple raised gardens, black berry, red raspberry and black cap berry bushes. Sigh. Live with son and family in new to all of us house. Had no idea that my “gardening” gene had passed to him. In preparing house to be sold, he took my entire compost bin contents and used that to create a new raised garden by the side of the house. Believe current plans are for flowers, but think some veggies will sneak in. Our city has not decided whether the community gardens are going to happen this year. If yes, then I’ll push hard for us to rent one. This “new” house is large for all of us, but on a very small lot with little sun light in backyard and code does not allow veggies to be grown in front yard. If my health stays constant and I don’t get the “transplant available – come NOW” call, I plan on lots of veggie gardening: tomatoes, basil, curly parsley, perhaps some parsnips, and winter squash.
Tiffany Nash says
Mini Greenhouse inside: Spinach, Mixed Lettuce (may move outside)
Pots on back deck: Peas, Bell Peppers, Tomatoes, Raspberries, Strawberries, Romaine from cuttings
Hanging baskets on back deck: Not sure yet – may move strawberries…
Two 4′ Raised Beds: Green Beans, Kale (the plant that never dies), Carrots… Working on a plan.
Cindi says
What a nice thing for you to do!
I’m growing rainbow chard, arugula, lettuce, carrots, radishes, peas, broccoli and cabbage in my greenhouse. I have tomato and pepper seedlings waiting to go out when it warms up a little more. I’ll plant more peas next week in a high tunnel. And outside in raised beds, after it gets warmer, I’ll plant summer and winter squash, pie pumpkins, celery, green beans, onions, potatoes, flowers and herbs. I love gardening.
Nancy says
We will be planting tomatoes, summer and zucchini squash, cukes, and a variety of peppers, in ground and in a raised bed. Currently we have a nice variety of lettuces, and some herbs. We will be adding to the herbs. Looking forward to getting out to buy some plants eventually.
Natasha says
We grow in raised beds and containers. This year we have lettuces, tomatoes (8 different types), cucumbers, pumpkins, melons, peas, beans, carrots, potatoes, cucamelons, brussel sprouts, cabbage, corn and popcorn. Plus tons of herbs and flowers. Your markers would be a huge improvement over my popcicle stick and sharpie method.
Deborah Herman says
We live in the high desert above 4000 ft and it is recommended that we put in a garden after Mothers day. I start all my tomatoes and peppers in April indoors and let them get nice and big.
We made a small 15′ x 2.5′ raised bed garden on our small patio along our back wall. This has the most full sun in our yard. We are putting up 4 trellises for the cucumbers and zucchini to climb. And as many herbs as I can. Sort of a pasta sauce garden. You should see my Rosemary and Basil, Thyme and Oregano.
I also want to plant some sunflowers out in our front 3′ x 7′ planter along with some assorted flowers to attract the bees.
I used to have a much bigger garden, but as I approach 70, I’ve scaled it back some. But I still love to garden.
Lori Hardt says
Here In the hot southwest, i try to grow a lot of things but you have to beat the summer heat! Not much grows in July and August here. We have 7 raised beds that we built when we moved into this house 17 years ago. Early and late season i can usually get lettuce growing. Kale has done well here in the fall, as well as cabbage. My go tos are potatoes, Bush and pole beans, and squash. I have tried strawberries many times, but the birds and lizards always get to the berries before I do! This was going to be my rest year for the garden beds, but with the world the way it is right now we figured we had better plant our own vegies again this year.
Tristen says
Here in SoCal Iām finishing getting my in-ground bed ready for tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, potatoes, cantaloupe (first time trying it), chocolate mint, basil, parsley, peas and lots of flowers intermixed with the veggies for pollinators. With my little one now out of school for the rest of the school year, itās a great project to do together
Tina L Clum says
We plan to grow herbs in boxes, and lots and lots of pumpkins
Lori Hardt says
We have raised beds that we built years ago and have aged well for us, haven’t had to rebuild them in 16 years! I grow a lot of squash, beans and onions. The quail here often “help” make gardening a bit of a challenge, as they get into the beds and dust themselves– scattering seed I’ve planted! Your garden markers would be an great help as I could move them around the beds as I discover which plant is coming up where. I’ve tried other markers and they just fade in the sun or disintegrate in the heat and dont last the season.plus they are beautiful!
Lucy says
Well its still pretty cold here in Northern Ontario – but we did hear our first Robin today so spring is coming! I’m plating garlic, strawberries, carrots, peas, beans and tomatoes this year – all in the beautiful raised beds my husband built me. š

Raised beds! I took your advice about the grow lights and theyāve doubled my growing season! Sungolds and damsel tomatoes, butternut squash, leeks, bunching onions and basil …. thanks for your blogging – itās a respite for us gardeners working Overtime in these days. Looking forward to simpler days

This year I have doubled my gardening space with raised beds and some large galvanized livestock tubs. I am growing tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, beets, garlic, squash, lettuce, cilantro, chili’s,bell peppers, pumpkins. I am hoping to grow enough to feed my family of 5,freeze some and share some with friends and family who don’t grow a garden!

Morning Mavis! We will be growing lots and lots of flowers for cutting in our two new beds as well as tomatoes, peppers, peas, squash and the like in the garden beds! Love following your journey and watching how much your life has changed over the years!
Debbie says
I’ve already started planting in my garden this year. I have 6 raised garden boxes, about 4’x4’x2′ deep each. A trellis on the end of 2 boxes. I garden on a hillside so boxes work well. I put in onion starts a couple of weeks ago, 3 tomato plants (I’m trying growing up a trellis this year), and green beans along the other trellis. I have Kale and lettuce still growing from my fall/winter garden. I’ll be planting zucchini, basil, pumpkins and peppers a little later this month. I also have thyme, rosemary and sage in a large clay pot by my front door. I have 2 other very large clay pots to use for this year’s garden, I’ll try more herbs, maybe for some tea. There’s also a pear and apple tree on our hillside, full of blossoms right now.
Love your blog and all your adventures in Washington and in Maine – I live in California and dream of going to New England someday. Happy Gardening!

We are doing a big garden project this year and I feel we are falling a bit behind. Last night at dinner I gave a pep talk that we needed to get it done so we could plant! The deer discovered our garden 2 years ago and ate everything (including our newly gifted amazing raspberry canes). Last year we didnt plant. Because we are spending so much time at home this year we decided to move the raised garden beds to an area that is easier to fence and closer to a hose (we previously had to haul water up a hill). The fence posts are in. We have to repair one bed and build another, get dirt from the neighbors manure pile, haul the old dirt down and then we can plant! We are growing the basics: carrots (rain or and regular), pole beans, snap and shelling peas, sassy salad mix, spinach, radish, pumpkin, sunflower…I feel like I missed something. And I just realized I forgot the zuchinni seeds! Our plan was to make craft stick markers, but yours would look way better!
Carol O'Connell says
Oh MY! I would absolutely love to win a set of your gorgeous markers! How generous of you to offer some up. I plan on planting spinach, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, beets, zucchini, potatoes and herbs. Of course it will all have to wait until the snow melts…
Nikki says
We have raised garden beds and also have a community garden plot. We love growing swiss chard, spinach, arugula, tomatoes, heirloom carrots, parsnips, beets, and more beets, pole beans, cucumber, and zucchini. I have a separate herb garden with several basil varieties, thyme, dill, oregano, and chives. Would love a set of your garden markers-they would look so much nicer than my popsicle stick markers!

We set out 2 small artichoke plants last fall, and they have shot up and already have 6 artichokes on them! (Of course the first 3 we put out died…had to find a different location in our yard before this success). We are also growing tomatoes and Anaheim chilies, plus an assortment of herbs…the Italian parsley lived thru our mild winter and is bigger than the rose bush itās next to. Iām a gardening newbie so itās all an experiment for me :).

potatoes, tomatos, squash, and more. Lots of flowers to come!

Hi Mavis! What a fun idea! Loving reading what everyone’s got planned. Thanks for running this little contest, as well as keeping a consistent and upbeat blog – it means a lot. š My husband and I are condo owners with a container garden. Every year we go with basics like oregano, thyme, basil, and rosemary. Most of our plants winter very nicely here (Bellevue, WA) and we can just reuse the ones we already have. Those pots that we don’t have in reserve are carefully chosen with new herbs (or one time, gorgeous Thai dragon peppers) and use those in our dishes for the next year. We’re still learning, but this is our 4th year doing this and I’m so excited to spend some mornings out there clipping herbs for drying and soaking in their scent while doing so.

I live in the San Diego area on 1 1/2 acres. We grow food year round, with over 100 trees and 8 raised beds as well as in ground row crops. We use permaculture techniques and grow a ton of food. We give away over half of what we grow because it makes me happy to share. My favorite things to grow are sweet potatoes and butternut squash because they store so well and are so easy to grow. I have an Instagram account that features my garden called Blossomvalleylife.
Wendy Lato says
We have 4 4×8 raised beds and 1 4×16 bed. One bed is all strawberries and we plant veggies in the other beds. This year we are planting peas, carrots, spinach, beets, radishes, lots of squash, artichokes, broccoli, pumpkins, beans, Swiss chard and tomatoes. We set up a tomato jail for pole tomatoes. It contains 25 plants. We also have raspberries contained in a structure my husband built.
Nancy O'Brien says
Well, I usually plant all sorts of veggies in raised beds that cover my side and backyard in Ontario. However, this year we are also renting an apartment in Nova Scotia while we babysit our grand daughter during the day. Because of Covid 19 we are not able to return to Ontario to plant our gardens or else we would have to self-isolate there and back for a total of at least a month. That wouldn’t work as we are doing daycare for our daughter and son-in-law who are now working from home. When we first moved here I rented an allotment space to plant a small 4 x 8 garden. It was the only community garden I could find that didn’t have a multi-year waiting list! Now, we aren’t allowed to go to pubic spaces at all so I won’t be gardening there for the foreseeable future. That leaves our balcony. I have ordered 5 massive fabric pots, bags of earth, and seeds. I’ll be planting herbs, cucumbers, lettuce, peas, beans, etc. I’m also sprouting pea seeds to add to salads…yummy! So, even though my garden will be limited this year, it will still BE!!! Where there’s a will, there’s a way to garden! Stay safe and elbow bumps to everyone!
Noelle Larson says
I have limited space but I will be planting tomatoes, sweet peppers, basil and jalapeno for sure. I have had some success with broccoli and may try that again as well. I have some large planters in my parking strip in Seattle.

Mavis, Peas, lettuce, spinach, radishes and onions are planted in raised beds and have poked out!! Tomatoes and other warm weather veggies will be planted in May. I use large containers outside my rear door for my herbs. It makes them easy to pick when needed. Your garden markers would make me smile!
Thanks!!
Lori King says
I love these markers! I am planting basil, parsley and cilantro along with a tomato plant. The heat in Texas is so brutal I have had a horrible time with gardening. The herbs in a large long container on my patio under the cover and the tomato hidden between two bushes to keep the sun from cooking it. It’s a balance between sunlight and sun heat!

I will be growing heirloom tomatoes in the ground at a community garden on Whidbey Island.

Tomatoes, basil, dill, spinach, radishes, rosemary, beets, okra, cucumbers, snap peas, corn, tomatillos, all in a mixture of raised beds, pots, and one patch in the ground! And probably some other stuff that my husband will buy on impulse even though we don’t really have space!
Kelli says
We plant a large in-ground garden, always consisting of tomatoes, potatoes, corn, beans, carrots, peas, cucumbers, lettuce, radishes and pumpkins. We also have a large raspberry patch. I usually look around every year and see if there is anything else we’d like to plant that’s different but I’m not sure what it is this year.

Vancouver Island – I grow everbearing strawberries (bought 3 years ago and going strong, need to separate them and take some to Mom’s), chives again planted 5 years ago, russian garlic which will be ready soon as was planted in fall. From seed I have started snap peas, tomatoes, cucumbers and cilantro. I haven’t planted this yet as too soon but am planting New Zealand spinach and romaine lettuce. I have a couple growing boxes and the rest are in pots as don’t have an actual garden but this works. I usually have a high yield tomato crop as the boxes are down sunny side of the house and the sun reflects off the siding. I might grow more, depends on what seeds/plants I can find in the next month or so at the few places that are still open. Fortunately, grocery stores here usually carry a few starter plants. Might get some peppers although I never can get them to grow very weell.

I have 2 raised beds and 12 containers. Growing squash, beets, cucumbers, onions, lettuce, basil, and of course tomatoes!

Hello Mavis,
I will be growing everything I can this summer in my Massachusetts garden! So far I have planted mache, spinach, radishes, turnips, beets, snow peas, snap peas, shelling peas, favas, chard, scallions, arugula, romaine and carrots. I plant in a cold frame, earthbox containers and the ground. I am using agribon on some areas and greenhouse plastic over low tunnels in others. I will add tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, butternut squash, eggplant, cucumber, basil, nasturtium, alyssum, Mexican mint marigold and more radishes around my squashes in attempt to fight back against the vine borers! I love seeing your garden progress and love the look of your garden markers. I would take any of them! Thanks!!

What a fun giveaway! Thank you for the chance to win! š
We are going to grow tomatoes and peppers and probably some other things as well. We have a garden bed in our front yard that my husband dug the clay out of and put good soil in. I’m hoping to finally get a handle on the stink bugs this year which eat our tomatoes and anything else they take a fancy to.
Jennifer says
I guarantee I am planting peas because they are already planted. Hoping for tomatoes, beans, kale, radishes as well. My dh built me a new raised garden box – 20 inches high. I need him to build me 2 more to get everything else planted.

As a new gardener, I’m planting basil, cucumber, chives, green onion, mint and rosemary in containers that sit on my front porch. I’m very excited after reading your blog for years and seeing what you have created in your various gardens, to put some of your advice into practice.
Alice says
I’m a container gardener. We grow lots of different herbs, and lettuce.
Oh also a few peas along the fence line.
Thank you, Mavis
Miss you in the PNW

I’m lucky to have a Pear. Cherry, and Plum tree in the back yard. One bed contains blueberries and strawberries. I also have rhubarb.
I’ve not started my main garden bed yet. This virus thing has my timing all off. I generally do peas, spinach, kale, a couple of lettuces. I’d like to try cauliflower. Later in the season add tomatoes, basil, beans and squash.
I’m also planning on some peppers on pots in the front, especially Jimmy Nardellos.
Thanks for the giveaway.
Bernice says
I’ll be planting some sunflowers in a field and some near the house, in the ground. Then I have a picket white fence around my house, like of like an English garden (at least in my head) with raised beds in it…I plant flowers interspersed with okra, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos…and I still have in those raised beds from the winter some beautiful spinach plants, and fennel coming back.
Pam Bennett says
We are growing josta berries, currants, raspberries and thornless boysenberries along the back fence, blue berries and strawberries in raised beds, pumpkins, squash, and tomatoes in grow bags, greenbeans in raised bed boxes, and herbs in a half barrel. I hadn’t planned on anything other than the berries this year because we had planned trips to China in May and Ireland in June. Since those aren’t going to happen, we are growing more vegetables and raising to two red toy poodle pups. Nothing like gardening to refresh your soul in the clean air and raising puppies to bring you joy. Both make for a tired, but very happy family.
Veronica says
I have three types of tomatoes, bell peppers, garden beans, zucchini, two types of basil, oregano and thyme. I am also going to be planting yellow squash and eggplant.

We will be growing tomatoes (San Marzano and Amish paste for sauces, Black Krim, Sweet 100, and Caribe which is supposed to stand up the late summer heat well) pole beans, lettuce, squash, onions, poblano peppers and Serrano peppers, strawberries, watermelon and trying corn for the first time. Mix of in ground with lots of amendments and in pots on the deck.

Some of what I have planned will depend of the availability of starts. I have nowhere to start things in the house and our local Master Gardener plant sale may not happen

We have two beautiful raised beds my husband made last year, plus some containers (I prefer my peppers and tomatoes in containers). We will also clear a spot for the squash in the ground so it can properly spread out.

Barbara Jodrey says
Asian pears are always the challenge; they only need to be picked or picked up, fed to the next door day care children, neighbors, or put into a recipe. Although, for 1 neighbor we had to trim away 1/2 of a tree’s branches!
But we love the pears. We need to move, but the pear trees make it almost impossible. Yes, you can miss a tree very badly. Another beauty is the Rose Moss or Portulaca-and they reseed themselves! They come with 20 hours of weeding, one summer I kept track. The colors are astounding and so worth it! Other favorites in the garden are kale and collard greens, which can easily overwinter. Then there are the vegetable jewels: basil, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, swiss chard, sweet peas, green beans and squash, all from the earth…Mavis, Thank you for your amazing pear recipes, your great energy and inspiration!
Barbara says
Tomatoes, beets, basil, spinach, kale and green beans. Most will be planted in raised beds but a couple maybe in containers. We just moved here so I have work to do before I plant! Thanks, Mavis! You make me smile. And I hope I win.

We are going to be mixing it up this year. We traditionally plant in a fenced in garden at the back of our property. This year we will be doing pots, inground and container vegetables. It is getting harder to pick those low lying vegetables, so we thought this would be a good time to mix it up. It is also getting a bit tougher to get all the supplies needed. We will be sowing lettuce, green beans, carrots and planting heirloom, slicing, cherry and sauce tomatoes. We will also throw in cucumbers and yellow summer squash. Love gardening and reaping the benefits! YUM!
Linda Huth says
Love the garden markers! I always plant potatoes, jade green beans, zuchinni, tomatoes and peppers. Hopefully this will be a good growing year!

Most of my garden will go in the ground and in my straw bale cold frame, but I’m experimenting with a few things in indoor window boxes and maybe in portable porch containers that I can bring in on chilly nights or move out of the wind on windy days.
I grow a variety of veggies but this year will be focused on caloric staples like squash and potatoes, plus greens like lettuce, kale, and chard. And my usual 200 heads of garlic. No, that’s not too much garlic, why do you ask? š
Would love to have some terra cotta mavis markers!

This will be my first full summer growing season at our new house. I just had an old swingset removed yesterday so I can build a raised bed in that spot — the best south-facing sun on the property! I will grow tomatoes, peppers, basil, onions, broccoli, brussels sprouts and hopefully a few other things. I didn’t start any seeds this year. I had planned to save time (since it’ll take a while to get the bed ready) by buying plant starts, but they seem to be sold out everwhere. I did order some seeds, and maybe more plant starts will be available in another month or so. We’ll see. Thanks for doing this contest. I enjoy your blog!

Then I’ll have sugar snap peas and cucumbers growing up the fence, Roma tomatoes in the corner, pumpkins and sunflowers by the driveway, hyssop by the shed, pole beans on the bean tepee, and a schisandra vine growing up a dead tree. Plus my lovely lilac bushes from last year, and the bulbs, lavender, and sage in the front yard, plus all my pots with different herbs and flowers. And the lemon balm and mint in the side bed.
Leslie Reed says
Do you make a marker for cucumelon! That’s my wild card this year. They are cute little cucumber melons or something. Look like watermelons for a fairy garden. Meanwhile, I love your markers and they would class up my garden of tomatoes, chard, kale, peppers, collards, beets and onions. I also have ordered several dahlias and refuse to put most in the front yard where I don’t see much of them. I love them for cutting so they will go near the vegetables. My gardening skills are getting better, but Missouri has such hot, humid summers, I never know whether I’ll get a bunch of my favorite Cherokee tomatoes or not or whether something else will surprise me. Thanks Mavis.
Leslie Reed says
Oh, and P.S. Some of my things are in raised beds. Herbs both in pots and in ground. And I just bought 3 6-foot heavy-duty wire panel cages for tomatoes. those will go directly in ground. I like having strong supports.

Herb garden includes basil, cilantro, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, and mint. And donāt forget the asparagus, strawberry, and raspberry patches.

I created three lasagna garden beds which we call the dead men piles. They look like burial mounds seen in old westerns. I will be planting them all as the three sisters – corn, beans & squash. I might throw in some kind of flower too. In my courtyard planters that are safe from deer and squirrels, I will grow lots of basil and tomatoes. We love us some pesto and tomato sauce.

We’re going to try basil in a raised container. We had a family friend that was able to grow an abundance a few years ago so we’re giving it a shot. If that works out I’ll try some green onions and spinach.
Amber from Ontario says
As usual, I will be planting heirloom tomatoes in the ground, surrounded by very large round cages made from fencing wire. Also, Red Russian Kale, and Red Deer Tongue heirloom seeds are already planted in the ground, with chicken-wire cages on top to keep the rabbits away. In a collection of old galvanized tubs I have collected over the years ( my favorite is an old Beatty Wash Tub !) I am going to grow radishes as a first crop, then a variety of heirloom lettuces, like Bronze Arrow, and I always like to include a small French Marigold to help with organic pest control, and pollination. Of course I have other cages, in this case old round metal wire tree baskets, which are turned upside down over the tubs, to — you guessed it, keep the bunnies away ! They can have the dutch white clover I planted all over the lawn for them, and they are fat, large, healthy cotton tails let me tell you !!! They are out there every morning and evening going around all the upside down old freezer baskets I have temporarily over my tulips and some other small bulbs, as well as my assorted cages in the veggie garden. It works folks, but makes for one strange looking garden for awhile until the plants are no longer quite so young tender ! It gives the neighbours something to talk about !!! š
Trudy Brangenberg says
We have four raised beds and we will be using three this year and letting our daughter use the fourth. We have already planted Brussels sprouts, kale and beets in one bed. Hello everyone, we will be planting all of the regulars (potatoes, tomatoes, squash, carrots, cucumbers, corn, etc). Weāre going to be starting some raised beds for the smaller things and keep the larger items (corn, potatoes) in the larger garden. We were already planning on expanding the garden prior to all this COVID stuff so now due to isolation weāll definitely have the time to tend it, ha ha. Have a wonderful growing season everyone and stay healthy!!!ā¤ļø

We have the following trees already – lemons, blood plum, figs, kumquat, loquats, apricot, almonds, apple, other plum, green gauge, persimmon, olives.
We have the following permanent plantings in our vegetable patch (on the ground)- red currant, white currant, blueberries (never successful and about to be removed), gooseberry, rhubarb, silverbeet, mint, spring onions, rosemary, passionfruit.
Things I intend to plant in 2020- broad beans, carrots, a variety of beans, beetroot? snow peas, coriander, tomatoes, brown onions. I also love to grow flowers (e.g. cornflowers, stock, love in the mist).
Our big project during ‘coronavirus’ is to build a permanent quality raspberry cage – and plant a large amount of raspberries, that the birds and possums cannot access. Raspberries are very expensive to buy at the supermarket in Australia – I can’t wait to grow our own.
We also have 4 large raised garden beds (corrugated iron) which I currently grow – sweet peas, pumpkin, lillies, nasturtiums.
We both work full-time, volunteer and study – and have some busy teenagers – so we are very time poor. We don’t have a lot of time in the garden, but we really love our garden.
Robin says
Our family is growing tomatoes, kale, carrots, and lettuce in our front yard garden. That’s where the sun is!

Happy growing. xx
Deborah Fair says
I am planting all the herbs I can find, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeƱos and Thai chili peppers. I moved to DC over the winter and only have a concrete patio but I have a patio which makes me so happy. Everything will have to be in containers but at least I can still garden in the city.
Cris says
Hi Mavis,
At the moment I’m growing tomatoes, zucchini, Yukon Gold potatoes, onions, garlic and chard in raised beds. It’s time to harvest the chard, just haven’t gotten to it yet. Last year I planted strawberries in a pallet that I have at a 30* angle instead of flat on the ground. They’re not growing as well as I’d like but it’s still early in the season. Boysenberries are in a HUGE pot (like a water trough). All of this is in my front yard. Makes for interesting conversations when I’m out watering.
Heather says
I love the plant markers. We will have tomatoes, zucchini, garlic, onions, peppers and berries as a minimum in raised garden beds. It is way too early to plant here so we might decide to add more by the time it warms up.

We are growing several kinds of tomatoes, green peppers, yellow squash, zucchini, okra, cucumbers, and lettuce. We are still looking for some more herbs and maybe one or two eggplant. We grow ours from plants (not seeds) in four “graves” using the Lasagna Gardening method. We also have four livestock basins we use. We plant along our deck and in some pots. We have a very small back yard but it produces a lot of produce!
Chris M says
Weāll be planting in raised beds … we have 8; plus we have fruit trees and a couple of small spaces in our yard where we plant edibles. I am moving my herbs to pots on the deck. Hopefully, Iāll be able to get some plants a little bit later on. In the meantime Iām going to start sewing peas, lettuce, kale, chard, radishes, beets, green beans, yellow wax beans, and zucchini into the ground. I want to also plant tomatoes, peppers, maybe an eggplant, and some cucumbers. We also do potatoes and might try some winter squash. It seems prudent to put as much in as possible. Thanks for having this!
Susie says
I have 3 raised bed planters. I grow tomatoes, lettuce , squash and green beans.

I don’t have a garden myself but would love to win these for my daughter. She is a child-minder, and loves spending time in her garden with her wee charges. Last year, she put in several large planters around the patio area, not everything was successful (smallest carrots in the world, anyone? ), but she’s going to try again this year with peas, blueberries, lots of herbs, as well as sunflowers and sweet-peas. Stay safe.

For fruits: every year I plant 3 more blueberry bushes in our side year. It will be a great hedge! They are planted in the ground and last year my HH made modular heavy duty bird screen blueberry cage that can be unscrewed and neatly put away after we (and not the birds) enjoy the berries. I also am hoping the get an old pack of Ground Cherries to germinate and, if successful, they will grow in the raised beds along the perimeter of our yard. Veggie-wise, Cascadia Peas are my favorite thing to grow and eat, followed by beets! My favorite herb to grow is Summer Savory.

My perennials are strawberries, columnar apple trees, blueberries, thornless blackberries, rhubarb, asparagus.. The Garlic I planted last fall is growing. This year I am planting 2-3 different paste tomatoes & my favorite cherry Roma tomato, sugar snap peas, pole beans, pinto beans, cucumbers, peppers, basil, chives, parsley, marigolds, zinnias, creeping thyme. Sunflowers & nasturtium from Botanical Interest. Most will be grown in the ground, but I am implementing raised beds. New this year will be ground cherries. I am going to try a couple of different techniques for me – one is growing potatoes in half barrels & a cardboard box. Also, I am trying to raise my greens hydroponically (Kratky method) in my basement with grow lights to avoid pest damage. If I succeed then I will be able to grow them during the winter. I might try summer squash, but I have a terrible time with squash bugs. Oh, I want to try lingonberries too.

Until we moved to Southeast Asia as missionaries, I had an enormous garden in Oregon with 12 raised beds, fruit bushes and trees, and potatoes, beans, pumpkins and corn planted in tilled and amended soil. Here in Thailand I have struggled to grow much of anything (which has more to do with my lifestyle)…..but my daughter (a first year nurse in Boise) has picked up where I left off and is growing a garden full of wonderful veggies in Idaho! She is growing beans, carrots, chives, celery, eggplant, sage, kale, lettuce, basil, garlic, onions, Brussels sprouts, sugar snap peas, snow peas, and more!
I’d love for her to have a set of your beautiful garden markers!
Cate says
Hey, Mavis. Thank you for this offer – I think the markers are adorable! We are using raised beds (four 3′ x 6′) to grow peas, green beans, potatoes, carrots, pickling cucumbers, onions and tomatoes. I have a small potager off my back patio (which has a pergola over it for shade) and will grow lettuce, strawberries, rosemary, thyme and tomatoes in pots. I will also grow spearmint and chocolate spearmint for teas in large pots. I have lavender out front and use it for sachets and cookies. We hope to put in blueberries and raspberries this summer. Have a wonderful week!!
Teckla Buller says
I am planning to have lettuces, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, beets, sugar peas, basil and other herbs, and maybe some beans, No ground space–I rent and have specific rules about things that I can do and things that I can’t, so pots and large standing planters it is. And I should get started ASAP! The weather has finally warmed enough so that I can get going. I also should get my tomatoes started so that they can go out mid to end of June. Thanks for a lovely giveaway. And please stay safe!

Lots of Rainbow Chard, zucchini, snap peas and we may even try some micro greens in a shady spot. Love it!

Hi, everyone! Since we are looking to list our home for sale soon (?!) I’m not sure I want to make a huge effort this Summer.
I will, however, make a renewed effort to increase my care of what I have established: raspberries in raised beds are doing great, peonies are getting more attention this Spring, and 2 new in-ground flower beds were planted last Fall—can’t wait to see how they turn out!
Ok….well maybe I’ll throw in a few seeds in some of my raised beds for the next owners.
Pam says
I have already started a lot of my seeds indoors. I will be growing lots of tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, acorn squash, zucchini, cucumbers, radishes, beets, green beans. I grow in raised beds so hopefully I’ll have enough room. I was hoping to add a couple more beds but I need soil and that doesn’t look like it will happen this year.
Christine says
My kids and I were just talking about what we want to plant this year! I think we will do cherry tomatoes and squash(?) we are newbies at gardening but I love that my kids and I do it together! These will be in containers and in the ground.

The herb bed has parsley, dill, valerian, sage, angelica, thymes, rosemary, horehound, ginger, lemon grass, chives. The last spot, the hedge row is where we harvest blackberries, wild plums, and rose hips. Dang! Writing all of this down makes me realize why I’m so pooped.
Linda J says
I’m currently growing cool season veggies in raised beds – spinach, lettuce, radishes, beets, carrots, peas, onions, shallots, potatoes, broccoli. In a few weeks I’ll start adding warm season items such as corn, tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, etc. Most of those will go in what I call the flat garden. I also have a little herb garden I’m expanding this year. Trying salad burnet for the first time, so that should be interesting.
Suzie says
I plant all my annual herbs in pots. So I can bring them indoors late fall and extend the season. My favs are lemon verbena, basil, rosemary and mint. The veg garden is pretty extensive. I can and freeze everything that isn’t eaten fresh. Its enough to last us till the following season. Those markers would be adoreable in my herb pots or garden. Fingers crossed.

This is the first time in a long time we will be able to garden. We will be container gardening as we are renters. We will be trying our hand with several heirloom tomato varieties, as well as sun gold tomatoes (yum), sweet peppers, pickling cucumbers, herbs, and possibly strawberries and/or a small fruit bush. It can be so very hard to decide as there are so many wonderful things to grow. We all love our veggies (and fruit) and don’t want to miss an old favorite or miss out on finding a new one. How does anyone ever make their choices? By the way, how very clever you are to make your plant markers out of terra cotta – so pretty and practical! I hope we win a set as our son is so excited to start his garden this year. He will be in charge (as head gardener instead of asst.) this year and is looking forward to rising to challenge! Thank you for the chance to win these great markers. I hope everyone stays safe and well during these difficult times.

We have a 8 x 20 area that we till up for some of our garden. I am doing something a little different this year with my squash and pumpkins though, I want to try them in either tires or small boxes. Then I am doing separate areas for my corn, regular and popcorn! We also have our peppers and tomatoes already up in the greenhouse and ready for transplant! ( can you tell I am itching to get into the garden!!) Lol Oh and I almost forgot the pole beans, they are going in there also…
Becca says
We planted strawberries & flowers by the front door and in the side garden area, which is kinda like a raised bed but its super long and right up against a fence, I plan on planting some sugar snap peas, tomatoes, possibly some cucumbers and hopefully some raspberries, if I can figure out a way to prevent them from spreading. I also am going to try to do hanging baskets this year, just don’t what I’ll put in them besides flowers at this point.

I have a 20X30 vegetable garden where I grow beans, tomatoes, peppers, peas, lettuce, okra, squash, cucumbers and whatever else strikes my fancy. I also have a couple of raised beds with strawberries and asparagus. I have foundation plantings around the house. We are essentially a full-sun midwestern property, so mostly sunny stuff. My parents live next door, and they raise hostas and designer daylilies. I have a lot of really showy lilies, as well as some hostas tucked into the few shady areas. My creeping phlox has really taken off in the past few years, and I’m hoping the mild winter will result in a few hardy survivors among last years “annuals” we also have a couple of forsythia and full bloom and lilacs in bud. We have several serviceberry trees as well, and a small orchard area with peaches, apples, pears and plums. I’ve got lots of those veggies started in my basement right now, and a pot of lettuce on the front porch.
Cari Fallis says
Hi Mavis: Greetings to you from Corona virus isolation up here in Ontario, Canada. Looking forward to sunny days and plants all around!
We’re already getting daffodils in the garden, and I can see shoots starting on the hydrangea. Hosta is peeking its little buds from the ground.
This summer, I will buy less tomato plants (perhaps three total), and one “mouse cucumber” (the tiny, grape-like variety for summer salads). I have a little corner garden that I’ve bordered with an old iron bed head and footboard, placed at a ninety degree “L” angle to form a whimsical corner in my garden. That will be enough tomatoes for the two of us.
For flowers, the more perennials, the better, to keep colour all summer long, and some old-fashioned Boston ferns for easy care and interest on the front porch and gazebo.
Succulents and herbs will round out my summer plantings in a hanging trough just outside the kitchen door.
Happy summer!
Thanks,
Cari

Same as mint, chives and lovage. We also have blueberry, black currant, raspberry and strawberry bushes, apple tree and just a week ago planted a cherry tree too. Love your markers! DH wanted to decrease our garden this year, but with all that is going on, I’m going to plant some old seeds and see if any germinate. Hubby just put in the tomatoes and peppers in our raised beds today. (He likes plants, I like seeds). I’m trying out several varieties of lettuces, beans (black, wax, lima, green), onions and some herbs (cilantro, basil, parsley). The herbs will go in containers and if any of the other seeds make it, I’ll fit some into the raised beds and some into pots as well. Good luck growing everyone!

Your bricked area is so pretty! I would love to have a set of your garden markers. They’re beautiful!
I’ve filled up the raised beds with starters: tomatoes, green beans, squash, Brussels sprouts…. plus started snow peas and beets from seed. I got antsy for more plants, so I started filling up cardboard boxes with potting soil and scattered some seeds (lettuce, parsley, basil, and more herbs.) I’m not sure how the boxes will work out. My husband felt sorry for me and ended up tilling an area in the background so I’d have more room to plant. I also scavenged an old plastic tub from the garage and got it ready—going to try vermicomposting this year. My kids think I’ve lost my mind.

I am doing basil, tomatoes (San Marzino) and a jalapeƱo plant in a galvanized stock tank off my patio this year. Also a pot with a bush cucumber and orengano in another. Scaled back due to my teenage daughter playing competitive softball year round, so not as much time as I used to have to garden.

Good morning, Mavis! I just started my vegetable seeds in the little greenhouse I bought this year. I planted four kinds of tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, squash, peas. I will transplant these to the outside garden when they are ready. My husband built me three raised beds and is going to add another this year. The next nice day we get I will plant lettuce (two kinds), carrots, basil, spinach and scallions. Today I will get the flower seeds planted and into the greenhouse. I am hoping that I can extend by flower budget by starting my own plants. I could spend a fortune on flowers! Thanks for the giveaway and good luck with your gardening projects… I love your brick edging.

I have sweet pea flowers that i will be planting near my house. They will climb up a bamboo teepee ties together with twine. I also planted holly hock bare roots and dinner plate dahlia bulbs. Hopefully they will give me something beautiful to look at soon.

Thanks Mavis! I will grow (if all goes according to plan): tomatoes, peppers, beans, cucumbers, beets, broccoli, carrots, lettuce, corn, radishes, sunflowers and a few more odds and ends. Most of this goes in the ground but will try a few things in pots since the deck should get more sun this year now that the trees were trimmed.

Itās my first year growing in zone 9b (from 4/5!), so Iām not setting high expectations and planning to learn! I hope to over summer the herbs in the raised bed in legs and the barrel. I have thyme, oregano, chives, rosemary, lavender, basil and dill going. Plus a few violas. I would love to add nasturtiums. I plan to put away the smaller pots and start them up again in the fall. Iāve been thinking about maybe some tomatoes and peppers because they like the hot, but donāt currently have a shade for them.

I’m already in the depths of gardening (in-ground). So far, I’ve got Swiss chard, a variety of lettuces, mustard greens, spinach, cabbage, Chinese cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, broccoli raab, basil, fennel, a variety of peppers & tomatoes, summer & winter squashes and tomatilla. I will still need to add okra, eggplant and some spinach to take the heat, either Malabar or New Zealand and whatever else I’ve forgotten. In the perennial beds, I have asparagus, garlic & blackberries. I’ve also started a bunch of flowers & foliage to be added to my daughter’s wedding flowers – if the wedding ceremony gets to take place this summer. Garden markers would be great!! Being frugal, I just use a half of a popsicle stick – which isn’t always easy to read š

I took a temporary full-time teaching position, so I was going to take a break from my garden for a year. Then – surprise! So – now I’ve started: tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, crookneck, cucumbers, impatiens, petunias, and basil. I’ll sow nasturtiums, peas, and beans. There are lots of other flowers and succulents out there, as well. Odd assortment – but it’s what we enjoy. I’ve got two raised box gardens, more lining the back of the house – and random pots all over the deck. Wishing you all health and happy gardening!

I live in eastern North Carolina. Right now I have lettuce, shallots, onions, and peas growing in one raised bed. The lettuce is being used right now. In another raised bed I planted Cherokee Purple tomatoes, German Johnson tomatoes and basil amongst the spinach growing there. As the tomatoes grow they will provide shade for the spinach as it warms up. I have herbs growing in another raised bed. My parsley, thyme, and cilantro survived over the winter.

We started a few seeds as a science project with my kindergartener out of school here in Vermont. We’ve got peas, radishes & pumpkin sprouted and looking great. We’re hoping to continue to work on our garden this year maybe turning it into boxes (considering lasagna method!) and we’ll grow cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, kale, zucchini, pumpkins, carrots and beets if I can find my seeds in the garden. And peas in containers on the deck or new beds in front of it if I can get my husband to attach the lattice.
