For date day last week, the HH and I headed to the North Conway, New Hampshire area and one of the stops on our list was to Zeb’s General Store for a look around. We had actually drove to Zeb’s in early January but when we got to the store it was closed for inventory. This time though, it was open… and I am SO GLAD we made the trip back!
Zeb’s has only been around since 1991, but when you walk in the store it feels like it’s been open for business for at least 100 years or so.
The shop is filled with old display cases, bookshelves and sprinkled with old antiques pretty much everywhere you look.
I absolutely adore stores like this because you just never know what you are going to find. One minute you feel like you’re in a museum, and the next minute you spot something from your childhood and it brings back memories.
My grandmother had one of these washing machines! Can you imagine being excited about one of these? Like you had just won the washing machine lotto or something. 😉 Thankfully we’ve come a long way in the clothes washing department.
The wood floors. The bins, the barrels, the paper packaging. ♥ ♥ ♥
A penny candy counter. {Although these days, it takes a few more pennies to buy a piece of licorice}. They even had candy cigarettes and McGraws Giant Flat Taffy Candy. We ended up buying some for Monkey Boy’s Easter box of goodness.
I found a sweet little knitted hat with a pine tree on it made by a lady in Massachusetts. I loved it so much, when I got home I ordered one from her Etsy shop PlaidPineDesigns {I wanted all the money to go to her, because I’m funny that way about handmade items. I know how much work {and joy} goes into making something handmade}.
There were sooooo many local products in fact, I was amazed. White Mountain Canning Company was one of them.
Cheeses from nearby Vermont.
And Badger Balm was well represented there too. {Their cinnamon bay lip balm is my favorite}.
And of course, they even had offensively large tubes of Duke Cannon Lip Balm for sale. Something I could see my husband or Mr. Hillbilly having in the center console of their cars. 😉
Oodles of beauty products and handmade soap GALORE.
Mrs. HB would have spent an hour smelling everything in this room!
There was even a section packed with treats for dogs.
And Whoopie pies for pooches. 😉
And a wonderful assortment of traditional children’s books and toys {no overrated cartoon, or Disney characters thank you very much}.
Sling shots! Remember those? Raise your hand if you got pelted by something {rocks?} by your brother when you were a kid. Ahhh yes. Making mud pies, climbing trees, and building forts OUTSIDE until sundown. Those were the days. Do kids even go outside anymore and play with nothing but their hands and whatever treasures they can find on the ground?
Zeb’s General Store in North Conway is a true gem and the perfect shop to pop into for a trip down memory lane or to load up on rations and gifts. We give it a 5 out of 5!
So, if you ever find your way near the white mountains of New Hampshire, be sure and stop by Zeb’s. You’ll be so glad you did.
Have a great Wednesday everyone,
~Mavis

Did you buy any of the Soap? It is awesome for your skin. If you go back, or get a chance, buy some homemade soap.

Thanks for the lead on the offensively large lip balm. I can see one of these in my husband’s Christmas stocking. He is ADDICTED to lip balm. (We have looked for a 12 step program……………..but he in not interested in quitting.)

LOL I remember eating candy cigarettes! I felt so naughty buying them and pretending to smoke. I actually did like the taste. That looks like a really neat place!

I remember the peppermint flavored candy cigarettes with the pink ends looking like they were lit. My all time favorite with the european chocolate with white cigarette paper around them.

Zeb’s is one of our favorite places to go when we are in NH. The staff is very friendly and helpful too. We can spend hours there. It is packed in the summer.

First of all, congrats to your daughter for finishing the race!!! Lots of hard work!
That general store looks awesome! I’d be smelling everything right next to Mrs HB! Mmmmm. I spent about 30-40 min smelling things in homegoods last week, lol! And none of that was handmade!
I kick my kiddos outside. They figure out how to play with “nothing”. They always kill me when we go on camping trips….they just make stuff up….play in ditches….spend days sliding down a dirt hill (laundry was rough that trip, lol)….ie, have tons of fun! Funny enough, they are 12 & 14, and they still play so well! We have to sometimes force them out of their hidey holes inside, but then later we peek out….and they are playing and being weird and happy, and it’s great!

We go there every time we visit North Conway. Love it, Love it, Love it. One of my favorites. Also you should check out the 5 and 10 store right next to it. Great memories, miss them.

We have a neighbor across the street with three, beautiful boys. I see them outside ALL the time! I couldn’t be happier and love to hear them hollering and carrying on over there. It makes my day!

One of my granddaughters favorite thing to do right now is make mud pies. She will stay outside forever doing it!
So take heart- it looks like there are still lots of kids who know how to play outside-
I must admit I have never been in this store- but I sure will now, thanks!

Went there yesterday! Am now enjoying Old Village Bakery English muffin bread as cinnamon toast. Today’s field trip – Big Papas. Then back to school next week. The best adult field trips around here are in the summer – strawberry picking at 4 corners in Newbury VT and blueberry picking at Windy Ridge in North Haverill NH!
